Since 2008, Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has assisted 20 states through 58 #EMAC deployments for industrial disasters, infrastructure failures, political events, tornadoes, tropical storms and hurricanes, winter storms, and other natural disasters. Incredible job by the Emergency Managers, school districts, police departments, volunteers, other community members/organizations and all the supporting State and Federal agencies that helped make this incredible drill a success. With around 45,000 participants, this was the largest #volcano exercise ever held in the United States, and quite likely, in the entire world. It wouldn't have been at all possible without the months of work by the community members at the East Pierce Interlocal Coalition (appropriately acronym-ed "EPIC"), and their strong understanding of not only the hazards of volcanic lahars itself, but the need to have an educated and well-prepared community. A critical piece I attempt to share in the blog below: if the students at these schools can get to high ground and safety within the timeframe they have available - everyone else can, too! This drill, and the awareness it brings to the community *should* be enough to crush that fatalistic attitude some have about being "able" to escape a lahar in time - you absolutely can! We were glad we were able to answer the call when a sewer line broke spilling sewage into a creek. Originally planned as a drive pile, accessibility issues halted the drilling rig. In a flash, we introduced a series of micropiles, an A-shaped arrangement crossing the creek, supporting the pipe. Ecological and quick! Installed in 2 days, these micropiles were load-ready, allowing immediate pipe placement without waiting for curing. Speed was of the essence.
