In June, we proudly received the Vorarlberg Innovation Prize - the highest award in Vorarlberg for research, development and innovation. But why did we receive this award in the first place? We have the answers!
Railway track with continuously welded rail provide a high level of ride comfort and low maintenance costs. However, especially in summer high temperatures can lead to high longitudinal forces within the rail, due to its thermal expansion. This can lead to buckling of the track known as “sun kinks”, thus representing a high safety risk. For example, rail traffic in Great Britain had to be largely shut down in July 2022 due to the heat wave at the time.
That is why we are working on innovative solutions to provide rail operators with the best possible support in terms of safety and track availability. How does that work? Our elastoplastic Under Sleeper Pads allow better interlocking between the bottom of the sleeper and the top layer of the ballast. This increases the lateral track resistance, significantly reduces the risk of sun kinks.
After several years of development, our innovation can already prove its performance under real operating conditions in the track network of two infrastructure operators. We are very pleased that Getzner has now also received the Innovation Award 2023 from the state of Vorarlberg.

When Edison created the electric light bulb, he thought not in terms of a single device, but rather a whole marketplace. He focused on his customers’ needs – in other words, human-centered design. Edison’s approach was an early example of what is now called “design thinking” – that is, understanding a problem, challenging assumptions and exploring solutions. Juan Davila explores how adopting a “design thinking” approach could lead the lighting industry into an innovative future.

What a great concept this is!
Not Foodservice related but worth watching the quick video
If anyone has an innovative idea for the Foodservice Industry let's talk!
I'm reading Christensen's "The Innovator's Dilemma". Organizations think they're innovative when they listen to existing customers and churn out new products with requested features, and/or copy competitors.
Characteristics of an innovative organization?
- KPIs. Do your KPIs discourage failure? You can't have innovation without failures.
- Budget. How large is your R&D budget? More importantly, how much goes into disruptive technologies?
- Networking, partnering, M&A, JVs. Can you name the Team Leader responsible for identifying / talking to startups with strange ideas?
- Product Marketing challenges you with fresh ideas that are NOT copies of competition?
- Chip vendors (industry dependent): You have a close relationship with silicon manufacturers, that determine future capabilities?
- Standards bodies, guidelines, academia: You can name the team leader who is influencing standards; contributing to tertiary courses; returning with feedback.
- MBAs / short courses: You have an active program to encourage not only technical training, but also relevant business training.
- Hiring policy: Diversity. You hire people who speak up, who threaten the way you do things. And: One interview question asks "tell me about a time when you were innovative; what did you do and what was the outcome?"
