📢 CAIDP Advises US Congress on Privacy Legislation, Focuses on Need to Strengthen AI Provisions In a statement issued in advance of a meeting in Congress to consider the American Privacy Rights Act, the Center for AI and Digital Policy urged US lawmakers to strengthen key provisions concerning AI systems. As CAIDP explained, "We support this long-awaited step towards a federal privacy law. This work is urgent given the growing risks to public safety and civil liberties. Many AI systems rely on the collection of personal data. These systems diminish privacy and are used for mass surveillance. AI systems pose new challenges for privacy, dignity, autonomy, and equality." CAIDP made several recommendations: 1️⃣ Restore the Civil Rights safeguards for AI systems and the definition of "covered algorithm" that were in the original privacy legislation 2️⃣ Expand the definition of biometric data so that it aligns with the Federal Trade Commission definition 3️⃣ Make clear that Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) refer specifically to techniques that "minimize or eliminate" the collection and use of personal data 4️⃣ Ensure that a federal privacy law establishes a national baseline and does not preempt stronger state safeguards #apra #aigovernance Marc Rotenberg Merve Hickok Christabel R. UK Information Commissioner, John Edwards, met Commissioner Alexander White (Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Bermuda) to talk about the highlights of the Global Privacy Assembly 2023 conference that took place last week. A key resolution adopted by the GPA membership focused on achieving high global standards of data protection: https://lnkd.in/eE-DZrwb The two commissioners discussed the new data protection laws coming into force across the Caribbean, and how these GPA resolutions help organisations understand that there are standards that are universal around the world and the importance of consistent approaches. They noted that all jurisdictions, no matter how big or small, face the same issues such the potential risks and benefits of AI, quantum technology, or neurotech, and how it’s important that regulators across the globe support one another. The GPA membership adopted a resolution on the use of AI in employment, which demonstrates that data protection law is a form of AI regulation that addresses areas such as discrimination in employment and the upholding of individual rights. 📳 Balancing Innovation and Privacy: The Push for a Federal AI Data Protection Law 🗣 Recent discussions at the Senate AI Insight Forum, led by Chris Lewis of Public Knowledge, have brought to light a critical issue in the artificial intelligence industry: the need for stringent privacy regulations. ➡ The current AI boom is heavily reliant on "commercial data surveillance", allowing a few tech giants to dominate the digital world with their extensive data collection. This has raised significant privacy concerns. 📜 The proposed American Data Privacy and Protection Act aims to address these challenges. It seeks to minimize personal data collection, grant people rights over their data, encourage competition, and integrate vital civil rights protections. Notably, it aims to restrict certain forms of behavioral advertising, a move that has sparked debate within the advertising industry. 👥 Experts from Mozilla and the Center for Democracy & Technology have echoed the need for robust privacy laws. They emphasize that without them, we risk a 'race to the bottom' in terms of privacy standards. 🖋However, the advertising industry argues that AI's reliance on data is essential for its development and application. 🛡The urgency for a federal privacy law is clear. As AI continues to intertwine with our digital lives, the need to safeguard our privacy becomes paramount.
