Transformational School Principal • Helping School Leaders achieve great results for students staff • Turnaround Expertise • Conference Speaker
Leaders, as teachers and staff return from summer break, remember… Effective Summer PD is when there’s a good balance of targeted sessions AND classroom set up time. 🩵 Targeted Sessions — Summer PD should ONLY focus on the things that’s going to help teachers win on the beginning-of-year school priorities goals. — Rolling out everything, all at once, for the entire school year, is the opposite of focus. Don’t be that leader. 🩵 Classroom Set-up Time — Summer PD should include enough time for teachers to set up their classrooms. — Having teachers stay late or come in on the weekends to set-up runs the risk of them starting the year already burnt out. 🩵 A Good Rule of Thumb: — 45-50% of time spent in high-impact sessions that’s focused on a strong start to the school year — 45-50% of time spent setting up classrooms 🩵 Teachers will feel ready to receive students AND ready to win on the beginning-of-year goals. Slam dunk! 🩵 What’s something you do the ensure strong engaging Summer PD? —— Hi, I’m Alicia. 💜 I help school leaders build joyful excellent schools for students and staff. Currently hiring for: — Dean of Student Experience

Educator/Author--Helping people teach English even if they don't have degrees in teaching or English
Here’s a clip from a short video I saw the other day from Fox News about Gen-Z workers... While McDowell is describing employers here not vetting their applicants carefully enough, the exact same thing should be said for universities. Many Gen-Z college students have not been thoroughly vetted either. They are either at the wrong university, or they shouldn’t be in college altogether. When we as professors look across the faces in our classrooms and see rows of students who are too lazy and incompetent to accomplish the most basic university requirements, it’s very easy to say, “These kids today….” In reality, to McDowell’s point, it’s these types of kids today—the ones who were admitted to schools by greedy administrators and enrollment staffers. They overlook terrible high school transcripts, turn a blind eye to potential behavior problems, and neglect the greater good of the campus environment and the academic mission. They just see “butts in seats”—re: $$$. To borrow what she says, “This is what you get when you make no effort in figuring out” who you’re bringing onto your campus. If we wonder why Gen-Z isn’t ready for the workforce, it’s because they weren’t ready for college either. https://lnkd.in/emUv3nHx

Did you know that Colorado ranks #3 for the percentage of jobs requiring a post-secondary degree, according to this research by Georgetown University? By 2031 Colorado is expected to be #1 for the percentage of jobs requiring a post-secondary degree. This flies in the face of #Skills-Based Hiring, which overwhelmingly expands the talent pool, improves retention, enhanced hiring accuracy, and builds a more diverse workforce. With only 31% of Colorado ninth graders attaining a bachelor's degree, post-secondary credentials like ActivateWork's can bridge the talent gap, educate Coloradans affordably, and add to our skilled workforce. #SkillsBasedHiring #PostSecondaryCredentials #SkillsGap https://lnkd.in/gwTwfCEX

It is beautiful to serve the community! As I look back on my time as a member of the Disciplinary Committee, I cannot help but feel a mix of gratitude and nostalgia. The journey was nothing short of daunting, yet incredibly rewarding, and I'm excited to share a glimpse of that experience with you all. I still remember the butterflies in my stomach when I first joined the Disciplinary Committee. The responsibility of ensuring a conducive learning environment for fellow students felt like a monumental task. Imposter syndrome crept in, but I was fortunate to be surrounded by a supportive team of like-minded individuals who shared the same passion for creating positive change. As an unsung hero behind the scenes, the DC played an integral role in curating safe and inclusive spaces for the student body. From addressing conflicts to fostering a sense of belonging, every case we encountered presented a unique challenge. The learning curve was steep, but the camaraderie within our team made the journey not only manageable but also enjoyable. Working closely with the administration was a privilege that taught me the power of teamwork and effective communication with hierarchy. Bridging the gap between students and administrators, we discovered that our shared goal was to enhance the student experience. The collaboration enabled us to align our efforts, driving positive changes that resonated throughout the campus. I'll never forget the adrenaline rush after tackling my first case. The initial fear and uncertainty were replaced by a newfound confidence and understanding of the process. Each case was a learning opportunity, a chance to make a tangible impact, and a reminder that we were truly making a difference in the lives of our fellow students. Looking back, my time as a DC member was a transformative chapter in my life. It taught me the importance of empathy, effective problem-solving, and the strength of unity in administration. As we worked diligently behind the scenes, we contributed to shaping an environment where everyone could thrive. To all the current and future DC members, embrace the challenges, lean on your team, and remember that your efforts, though often unsung, are instrumental in creating a better campus experience for all. I should tell you about DWT, don't you think so? #BlessingLum

School’s out for summer, but the fight for equity in hiring is year-round! Here’s the tea… many districts are all talk, no action on diversity hiring. They say they want a rainbow of educators, but their practices are stuck on repeat. Imagine classrooms that reflect the beautiful diversity of our world! Studies show students thrive when they see themselves reflected in their teachers. So why are we still using the same old hiring methods that shut out talented educators of color? Calling all parents, students, and educators! Let’s get real: what can school districts do to ditch the tired tactics and actually attract diverse educators? Here’s a starter pack: 1. Forge new pathways for potential hires. School districts usually hire from two talent pools—new graduates looking for their first jobs or experienced teachers working in other districts. 2. Hire “strategically,” not “seasonally.” Like many school districts, BSD followed a traditional hiring season – opening positions in the spring and recruiting throughout the summer. 3. Erase implicit biases in hiring. One of the most detrimental problems in recruitment can be solved by training principals and administrators on what to look for in job applicants. Let’s share this post, tag a school board member who needs a wake-up call, and brainstorm ways to make our schools a wide scope of brilliance! #InclusiveHiring #EducatorEmpowerment #TheFutureIsDiverse #RepresentationMatters #diverseeducators #schools #educationequity #educationequality https://lnkd.in/gy23JpYj

New op-ed concerning Skills-Based Hiring. It's written in the Connecticut context, but could be applied to many states. While the idea of hiring based on verified skills (rather than degrees) has promise, it's not yet happening in most places and fields. But the evidence-free discourse around SBH could harm the students who benefit most from higher education, and the public institutions that serve them. https://lnkd.in/gHfsjBx7
Opinion: Proceed with caution in adopting skills-based hiring
