As the largest economy among the German states, North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is home to 19 of the largest 50 German companies, 9 DAX corporations and more than 150 hidden champions. Furthermore, the industrial heart of Europe beats in NRW. The high density of industrial and commercial enterprises represents countless customers, with 17.9 million people living in NRW and cooperation partners for digital technologies. The state is regarded as the leading location for the development of the Digital Economy and “Industry 4.0” or smart production.  This makes the state a driving force for the creation of innovative power and the realization of entrepreneurial ideas.  NRW benefits from it's broad-based university and science landscape. In the first half of 2023, start-ups in NRW increased by 21%, especially in the field of "green start-ups". As a result, one in five German start-ups is based in NRW.
