Our first annual progress report on the #EUChemicalIndustry's twin transition is out 👉 https://europa.eu/!YrxJwF ⚗ The report summarises the progress achieved over the past year on co-implementing the #TransitionPathway for the chemical industry. In 2023, we identified 187 actions with stakeholders to achieve a net-zero and competitive industry in Europe. Around 80% of these efforts have since been supported: https://europa.eu/!jGHjmp 🗺 The report also presents a new version of the transition pathway's regulatory roadmap. “The EU chemical industry is facing a perfect storm. The combination of high energy prices, lack of global demand and the US IRA means there is simply no business case for investing in Europe now. The Green Deal needs a business case in Europe. We urgently call on European leaders to make private sector investments in Europe’s industrial transformation the main priority during the next legislative cycle”, Marco Mensink, Cefic Director General. EU27 chemical production is expected to decline by about 8% in 2023 compared to the previous year, with no imminent recovery of chemical demand in Europe. The chemical industry anticipate energy costs, skills shortages, and increases in labour costs and raw material prices as key challenges in 2024, says Ian Cranshaw, Head of International Trade and Regional Affairs at the Chemical Industries Association. At the latest CIRS Group Global Chemical Regulation Conference, Ian Cranshaw presented an overview of the challenges facing UK chemical companies, which gathered delegates from 21 countries.
