Last night marked the opening of the 2024 edition of the Paris Cyber Summit, of which Paris Europlace is a partner. Several invited Paris Europlace members thus had the opportunity to exchange views with experts from many countries represented, on the following 2024 theme: "Is Artificial Intelligence a game changer for cyber policies?". Indeed, with the #digital age expanding its scope and ambitions, new risks are arising, especially around #cybersecurity. Growing interdependencies and more sophisticated interconnexions are a challenge for authorities to mitigate incidents and for firms to ensure business continuity in adverse circumstances. Law enforcement’s work has thus to keep up with the evolving #cybercrime landscape, as new threats to financial services could immediately impact economies and businesses. Consequently, operationalized partnerships with the private sector are crucial to addressing the digitalization of crime. In addition, #AI is lowering the threshold for entry into the criminal business world. Therefore, with barriers to entry easier to overcome for both cybercriminals and nation-state actors, combating cyber threats calls for a large cooperation between regional and global sources of expertise. In that respect, according to the Global Cyber Strategies Index proposed by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), #France benefits from a comprehensive strategy to face civilian and military national cyber #defense, digital content, #data privacy, critical #infrastructure protection, e-commerce, and cybercrime. Indeed, among #G7 countries, only two have this holistic, broad coverage: https://lnkd.in/ezdsAbJn But even if the European Union has recently taken some regulatory initiatives (#NIS2 and #DORA), it is more necessary than ever to exchange at a world level on risk management and new scenarios. Paris Europlace is glad to partner with Paris Cyber Summit to boost these international relationships and to better develop a common knowledge based on best practices to contribute to ensure companies and financial marketplaces remain resilient. Paris Europlace also happy to welcome all experts and relevant authorities in its cybersecurity working group chaired by Antoine CREUX. Many thanks to Sébastien Garnault Pierre-Alexandre Houver Nicolas BOUROT Leroy Terrelonge III Thomas Rocafull Mathilde Carle Sophie Le Goff Pavlina Pavlova Akram A. for making the 2024 Paris Cyber Summit another great success in that domain.

The fourth episode of our podcast series, Patching the System, titled “Would the proposed UN Cybercrime Treaty hurt more than it helps?” dives into how the current cybercrime treaty proposal on the table at the United Nations is raising concerns among private companies and nonprofit organizations alike. Some fear it covers too broad a scope of crime and could fail to protect free speech and other human rights across borders while not having the intended effect of combatting cybercrime. The episode features Nick Ashton-Hart, Head of Delegation to the Cybercrime Convention Negotiations for the Cybersecurity Tech Accord, and Katitza Rodriguez Pereda, Policy Director for Global Privacy at a civil society organization, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). Together, they discuss the provisions currently included in the proposed Russia-sponsored UN cybercrime treaty and why they might cause more problems than they solve. Listen to this conversation and all future episodes here: https://bit.ly/3QYJReW” #PatchingTheSystem #podcast #cybercrimetreaty #cybersecurity #UN

Researching and writing about cyber-y things. Bringing feminist approaches to security issues. Political analysis and perspectives.
Let's talk about accountability. For two years The Stimson Center's Cyber Program has been reading, writing, and thinking about #cyber accountability, and next week we will release a major report on the topic. The report examines accountability and transparency mechanisms from ten non-cyber transnational threats such as arms control, outer space security, human rights, ozone, and the private security industry, to name a few. We have asked: do any of these practices and approaches have relevance for the cyber domain? If so, how can they be applied to existing cyber governance models and fora, or in response to specific cyber threats? How can we improve the implementation of law and norms? While there may not be one silver "accountability bullet", we believe that there is good practice to look to, and our report presents a toolkit of possible options for policymakers and stakeholders alike. If you are curious to learn more and will be in New York next week, please join our #UNCyberOEWG side event on Tuesday, 9 July from 1:15-2:45 at the Permanent Mission of Canada. Space is limited, please register by Friday: https://lnkd.in/g66CPndw And if you won't be in NYC, not to worry! More events, including online and in Washington, are planned for later this year. #cybersecurity concerns everyone. No one can avoid it. This is the most important insight that our colleague Anna Wagner took away from the European Women in Technology in Amsterdam. Anna, an embedded developer, is a #securitychampion in our projects and ensures that the topic of IT security is considered from the very beginning of the development process. That's why her absolute highlight at the conference was the presentation "The Hackers Guide to Kubernetes" by Patrycja Wegrzynowicz: "At the beginning, Patrycja invited all the audience members to create an account on her website - only with false user data. Then, live and in real time, she hacked this website in front of us to demonstrate how easy it is to attack the default Kubernetes configuration." After 10 minutes, the entire traffic with all user data suddenly ran across the screen. This demonstration was very impressive for Anna: "Among developers, there is often the impression that you don't have to pay attention to security with large, well-known software products, because others have certainly already thought about it. But now I am finally convinced that no one should shirk this topic. This was a world-class cyber security memorial!" Together with our developers Hannah Magin, Annina Gschwilm, Lina Medina, and Safa kraiem, Anna gathered a lot of impressions at the European Women in Tech in Amsterdam: relevant talks, on the pulse of time, excitingly told. Great organisation, even in the back seats everything was understood and easy to see. In addition, you could take a break from the crowd in a rest area.
