Known as kelp, the brown macroalgae 𝘓𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘩𝘺𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢 (Gunnerus) Foslie, 1884, form vital marine forests that serve as nurseries and feeding grounds for various marine organisms. In Portugal, there are few forests left, from Esposende to the north, threatened by rising sea temperatures and herbivory. #Understanding #Protecting #Exploring #PortugueseBlueBiobank #BlueBioeconomyPact

These macroalgae, also known as kelp, hold an enormous ecological importance! They form large marine forests that change the habitat, serving as nurseries, feeding grounds, and resting areas for a wide diversity of marine organisms. In Portugal, the few remaining forests are located from Esposende northwards. Their disappearance from our coast is related to the increasing seawater’s temperature and herbivory. 🔎This species is mainly used in the production of alginates for the food industry and biotechnology. This strain belongs to the macroalgae collection of the 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸 at Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR), with the collection code CCMARBB_LH20.1F_NO.
