There are several steps that must be taken to recover from a disease. Some are easily overcome while others are more difficult. This is known as the “patient pathway”. To remove the barriers that may be encountered along this path, Damien Foundation takes a holistic approach that goes well beyond treatment. Step 1 is health awareness. Due to lack of information and awareness of the disease, people do not seek medical help or seek only late. Misdiagnosis can lead to lifelong disabilities (leprosy and leishmaniasis) or death (TB and leishmaniasis). To overcome this barrier, Damien Foundation trains medical staff and actively pushes awareness and detection campaigns, even in the most remote areas. The challenge?
