How many viewers will be tuning in for Super Bowl LVIII? 🏆 🏈 Maybe the better question is: How will they be tuning in? 📺 💻 📱 With an average of 115.1 million TV viewers, Fox's broadcast of Super Bowl LVII (2023) was the most-watched program in American television history. The halftime show, headlined by Rihanna, peaked at 118.7 million TV viewers. 🏈 📺 In addition, it's estimated that 18 million viewers streamed Super Bowl LVII (2023) with expectations that this number could double (2x) for Super Bowl LVIII this year. Driven in part by continued cord cutting, a large portion of this growth is expected to be driven by... you guessed it... Taylor Swift and her fans looking to tune in for (a chance to see her at) the big game. 🔌 ✂ Fun facts: 1) While the Apollo 11 Moon landing received more viewers (125 million). Technically, it was a combination of multiple broadcasts from various news outlets; not a single broadcast. 🚀 📺 2) Alternatively, the highest-rated broadcast was the M*A*S*H finale in 1983 with a 60.2 rating. This means that 60.2% of all US households with TVs were watching the episode when it aired. 🚁 🏥 3) Aside from Super Bowls, the most recent broadcast to receive a rating above 40 was the Seinfeld finale in 1998, with a 41.3 rating. ❌ 🥣 4) Heat map: Notice the dip in "out of home viewership" that occurred in 2020 and dramatic rise in streaming viewership.

TV's changing a lot these days, and Michael Schneider's got the scoop in his report on 2023's TV ratings. 1. Marathons are Big**: Channels like MTV and Disney Channel are playing their hit shows back-to-back a lot. 2. Basic Cable's Struggling**: Not as many people are watching these channels anymore. 3. Sports are Still King**: Channels with live sports, like NBC and Fox, are doing okay because of games. 4. Special Channels are Hanging On**: Some smaller channels are doing alright, especially those with unique shows. 5. Big Shifts**: Big names like HBO are losing viewers, but others are getting a boost from big events like the Super Bowl. #TVTrends #MediaUpdate #Broadcasting #2023TV

Linear TV is not dead. See how CBS is using linear and non-linear avenues to engage and entice viewers. ~~~ So advertisers still want to reach those younger viewers, but to reach those younger viewers through network shows, they need to look beyond the linear TV audience and take into account who’s watching those shows on Paramount or Peacock or Hulu? -Josef Adalian https://lnkd.in/dnEfsryi #television #media #mediaentertainment #streaming

What's interesting about this TVNewser report on network TV newscasts in Q4 2023 is not only that an average 19.5 million people still watch these programs DAILY, but that, on ABC, only 1.1 million of their 7.9 million viewers are age 25 to 54. https://loom.ly/S5-BO8g

Great take on Super Bowl TV audience size vs YouTube views by Sahil Patel in The Information. When Nielsen says 123.7 million people viewers tuned in for the Super Bowl, it’s important to know that this is an average viewing figure that also measures live, simultaneous viewing of every minute of the telecast. In other words: Nielsen is reporting that 123.7 million people, on average and at the same time, watched every minute of the Super Bowl telecast, which lasted about four hours. The only equivalent would be if 123.7 million concurrent viewers, on average, watched the entirety of a four-hour YouTube or Twitch live stream. As big as some of the top creators on the planet are, that has simply not happened yet. Online viewership metrics can be fuzzy and vary by platform. Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, for example, have historically counted a “view”—again, not “viewer”—after the video has played for three seconds. When you consider that many videos autoplay in the news feed, that hardly means anything of substance. On X, formerly known as Twitter, it’s not clear when a view is counted on a video. YouTube has never disclosed when a view is counted on a video, though some inaccurately believe it happens after a video has played for 30 seconds. https://lnkd.in/gW-C8a29

New Post: Golden Globes 2024 Draws 9.4 Million Viewers - The Golden Globes averaged 9.4 million viewers on Sunday night, according to Nielsen, an increase over the 2023 ceremony ratings but still significantly lower than the audience totals of just a few years ago.Until 2020, the Globes regularly drew 17 million to 20 million viewers. In 2019, the Globes was narrowing the viewership gap with the Oscars so significantly that it appeared the telecast could become the most-watched awards show. And then disaster struck.First came the pandemic, which deprived the 2021 Globes of its usual booze-soaked freewheeling ceremony, sending the ratings tumbling. Then came a scandal for the organization that administers the Globes, which led NBC to refuse to broadcast the 2022 ceremony. Last year, NBC gave the Globes a one-year chance, and the audience figures were still low: just over six million people watched. For months, there was speculation that a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon could pick up the rights to the Globes. That did not happen. In November, CBS picked up the rights for another one-year arrangement. (In a statement announcing the deal, George Cheeks, the CBS president, said that the Globes could help promote scripted programming that had been delayed by last year’s strikes in Hollywood. Those shows premiere next month.)CBS announced a host — a relatively unknown Jo Koy — only a few days before Christmas.Reviews for Mr. Koy were harsh, with critics taking particular issue with the comedian’s bizarre mid-monologue pivot, in which he blamed other writers for some of his dull jokes. “Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue?” he said. “Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me, right? Slow down. I wrote some of these — and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.”Critics were not kind to the telecast, either. Vanity Fair called it a “near-total disaster” and a critic at The Hollywood Reporter said it was “the dullest awards show” he had ever seen. The Ankler likened it to the “RC Cola of award shows.” #Golden #Globes #Draws #Million #Viewers https://lnkd.in/d8WMN7dV
