Head of Content (Doc Hearts), Commissioning Editor, Creative Producer & Specialist in Digital Creativity/Online Video
TRUE VALUES IN MEDIA ORGANISATIONS On Sunday evening my colleague at Doc Hearts, its founder Andy Mundy-Castle, picked up the #TV #BAFTA for best Specialist Factual programme on behalf of the team on 'White Nanny, Black Child'. This landmark for the company came in the wake of the #film winning the History category recently at the #RTS #Awards. It was an untold British story Andy had picked up on over five years ago and was single-minded (as ever) in bringing it to the screen. His emotional acceptance speech was received rapturously by the many peers in the audience: "I come from a council estate in Brixton and this place has been a tough, tough challenge for me to consistently prevail in. This means a lot. I watched these shows as a teenager and I dreamt for many years about being on this stage. I'd just like to say to everyone watching at home who may come from the same background as me: Keep on #dreaming, keep on working, get into good trouble." I first worked with Andy when I was at #Channel4 and I commissioned the first project of his own devising to be realised. It coincided with the culmination of a consultation prompted by then CEO Mark Thompson reappraising Channel 4's #values. The middle of three published values was "Make Trouble". (One reason why Channel 4 should be backing Andy and his Doc Hearts more substantially, the values are perfectly aligned.) I am as sceptical as anyone about the publishing of corporate values but that particular stab at it at C4 was exemplary and I used the 3 values every day as a Commissioning Editor: Do it first. Make trouble. Inspire change. It captured the Channel's remit perfectly and added some spice with that middle one. DocHearts similarly has powerful and laudable core values, all derived from its founder's mission and outlook, which were beautifully captured in his BAFTA speech. You can feel them when you walk into the office in Chelsea - committed people on a focused mission to tell untold stories from unheard voices. It is very important to be clear about the values of your indie or organisation; to express them well, capturing the underlying spirit; and to use them as a touchstone every day. #television #documentary #diversity #BAFTAawards #resilience #persistence #dreams

Decoding the Hollywood Writers Strike is essential for anyone who loves to watch good content, likes reading good writing and wants to write. In Any Form. While this might NOT be the social media platform to talk about fair pay and justice for creators, I have learnt that underlining and arguing for the truth is always worth doing. Please watch this video from nerdist.com to understand what this strike is all about. #hollywoodstrike #writersrights https://lnkd.in/dXJZPPJi

Creative Producer & Film Industry Consultant | Virtual Production Producer | I share my knowledge on filmmaking and audience growth. | Creating a filmmaking tribe.
If you want to be a GREAT Producer, Director, or Actor, you also need to be a great WRITER. But you don't have to be a successful writer, let me explain. If you don’t want to read this post. This video is a MUST watch! So now back to the post and my point. Everything comes down to story and story comes from writing. For Producers: Being a great writer helps you identify scripts with strong narratives, compelling characters, and emotional depth, which are crucial for resonating with audiences. Practicing great writing yourself allows you to better collaborate with writers and directors, ensuring the vision and quality of the film are aligned from script to screen. This deep involvement in the creative process can significantly enhance the final product's impact and success. For Directors: You must grasp great writing to effectively bring a script to life. Understanding of narrative depth, character development, and thematic nuances allows you to translate written words into powerful visual storytelling. This insight also helps you guide actors, shape scenes, and make creative decisions that stay true to the script's intent while adding your artistic touch. For Actors: You on the other hand, benefit from understanding great writing to fully embody your roles. Recognizing the subtleties and intentions behind your characters' words and actions enables you to deliver more nuanced and authentic performances. This understanding helps you connect more deeply with your roles, contributing to a more engaging and believable portrayal that resonates with the audience, as well as understanding where you can add to the screenplay and why. In the clip below Matt Damon tells a superbly smart story of how Jack Nicholson took a very basic scene and gave it much more character depth, without adding time or money to the schedule and budget. This small clip really sums up what being a great writer really means.

QUESTION: how important is it to have your main characters in relatable daily situations? I’ve worked on many developments, and the point that keeps coming up is placing the main characters in situations that the audience can relate to: home life, friends, and SCHOOL. This point usually comes from producers and broadcasters execs- ‘let’s make sure our main cast of kids is seen in school’. ‘If the main characters are of elementary school age let’s put them in elemantary school/little school/high school’ Personally I don’t know any kids who come home from school and want to watch cartoons about kids being in school. And using the usual tropes of school bully, homework issues, friends and family, seems to cast each show into the same framework. Peter Parker was fresh 50 years ago but is it still relevant to set your characters into this ‘close to life’ reality? Or can characters exist without building this ‘relatable’ construct around them? Specifically the school situation. Is it necessary to the characters, storytelling and finally, the target audience?

📺 HBO's "Succession" is a riveting drama that highlights the dysfunction and internal warfare within a wealthy, media mogul family. While it makes for great entertainment, it also serves as a cautionary tale in the context of succession planning. 🔑 Key Takeaways for Financial Planners: 1️⃣ Lack of Communication: In the show, family members are often in the dark about the patriarch's intentions for the business. This opacity leads to speculation, mistrust, and misguided strategies. Communication is essential in real-world succession planning. 2️⃣ Absence of a Concrete Plan: The series shows how the lack of a formalised succession plan can lead to chaos. It's crucial to outline clear steps, timelines, and responsibilities to ensure a smooth transition. 3️⃣ Emotional Decision-Making: Characters make impulsive decisions based on emotions rather than logic, jeopardising the long-term viability of the business. Financial decisions, particularly around succession, must be data-driven. 📚 Why It Matters: As a Certified Financial Planner, I know that succession planning is not merely an afterthought but an integral part of financial planning. Failing to properly plan can result in financial losses, tax implications, and even the disintegration of the business itself. 📌 Bottom Line: If you want to avoid the pitfalls illustrated in "Succession," consider incorporating a comprehensive succession plan into your financial strategy. Consult professionals to make well-informed, rational decisions that secure both your business's future and family harmony. #SuccessionPlanning #FinancialPlanning #BusinessSuccession #HBOSuccession #WealthManagement
