#UNGA kicked off this week in NY. In the words of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s High Commissioner Filippo Grandi: “110 million refugees and displaced are damning proof that we’re off target in achieving the #2030Agenda. But realizing its goals would address many of the causes that force people to flee….Less catchy than “close the borders” but surely more effective.” We’re at the UN this week to deliver the message that refugees and displaced people everywhere need and deserve truly inclusive policies and sustained international support. As of April 2024, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency estimates that there are 120 million forcibly displaced people globally. This is due to issues including conflict, persecution and human rights violations. Simply put, that's more than 1 person in every 69 people on Earth. Of that number, 43.4 million are refugees, a figure that increases year on year. Here at Stronger Together we recognise today as World Refugee Day. Refugee children are three times more likely to be poor than adults.   The case for extending social protection coverage to children – including vulnerable refugee children – is clear. It enables learning, it protects families from negative coping strategies and it strengthens the resilience of families to shocks. On June 3rd and 4th, I had the privilege to participate in a workshop uniting IFC - International Finance Corporation and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency colleagues from the Sahel region. Our discussions centered around actionable strategies to promote private sector initiatives addressing forced displacement. The UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) calculated that “at the end of 2022 as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations or events seriously disturbing public order” there were 108.4 million people worldwide who were forcefully displaced. Of that 108.4 million, 29.4M were identified as refugees, 5.9M as Palestinian Refugees, 5.4 as asylum seekers, 5.2M as other individuals in need of international protection, and 62.5M as internally displaced people.
