I got a degree in Mechanical Engineering but I did not pursue a career in it 😲 According to at least 9 people, I let go of a very lucrative career opportunity. I had my reasons but those are for another day. Instead, I turned to a Truck Dispatcher Here's how it's going 8️⃣ months after graduation: 1. I haven't had to worry about income. I'm earning comparable to my fellow graduates who have great jobs. 💰 2. I am working more than I would in a 9-5 job, but somehow I am way less drained. The internal satisfaction is priceless. 3. Willingness to learn and try new things is through the roof. Something I had lost during my engineering degree. 4. Breaking Barriers: Lessons Learned from my journey as a Woman Engineer My first job offer came from Cummins India Ltd through campus selection, with an intriguing condition – all trainees had to spend at least one year working on the shop floor. At that time, in 2002, the shop floor was not a place you would typically find women engineers. Despite this, I accepted the offer, unaware of the unique journey that awaited me. Working on the shop floor alongside operators, I not only learned the technical aspects of my job, from operating machines to drafting CNC programs to handling furnaces, but I also gained valuable life lessons that have shaped my attitude towards work and leadership. There are a few things which I learned in my first job and these serve as North Star for me; 1)Always do what is right, not what is convenient. 2)I made mistakes but learned to be responsible for correcting them. 3)I can learn and unlearn anything if I decide to. 4)If I didn't know, I asked for help, support, and guidance. 5)Always followed my instincts. 6)Never gave up easily, but persevered. 7)Learned to embrace the aspects of my character that made me unique. 8)Being proactive to upskill myself as per the changing times and remaining relevant. 9)Didn’t shy away from working on the shop floor. That’s the place I learnt lessons of a lifetime. These learnings not only guided me through my career but also continue to be my guiding stars today. From the power tool in your hand to the bustling conveyor belts and automated production lines of manufacturing, every man-made marvel bears the imprint of an engineer's skill. Without the expertise and knowledge of our engineers, the sleek lines of an electric car and the simple click of a phone would remain mere figments of our imagination. The skills of engineers have evolved the world we live in and impacts us every day. However, many don't realise their achievements and what they continue to do, especially in engineering a better and more sustainable future for us. It is important we celebrate and acknowledge the importance of engineers and the amazing things they do. After eight fulfilling years in a dynamic, male-dominated industry as a motor mechanic & fitter and turner (Completing 2 back to back apprenticeships on the tools - & 3 years in the CSG industry), I've decided to take a courageous step back to prioritise my core beliefs and reevaluate my career goals. It's crucial to recognise when it's time to pause, reflect, and make positive changes. For the past 8 years I’ve been busy putting my career first and building my own brand. I’ve completed 2x back to back apprenticeships in Automotive Mechanical Technology and also Mechanical Engineering-Fitting & Turning, along side taking out the Australian Migas Top Performer - Women in Trades Scholarship in 2022. Throughout this journey I've faced numerous challenges and learned from every encounter, which continues to fuel my passion for empowering women in STEM. Embracing the power of new beginnings and acknowledging that change is a catalyst for personal growth because in the right environment, personal growth becomes inevitable. I’m grateful to everyone I've met along this journey. Your lessons have been invaluable. 🙌 My commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for women and mothers in the workplace remains unwavering. Professional Silver Jubilee 4th July 1999 – The day I ventured into the industry as a Graduate Engineering Trainee and the letter that started the journey. The first year was a rigorous training schedule for the Crompton Greaves Limited - Power Systems Group, first ever #GraduateEngineerTrainee #InductionProgramme, which I am thankful to till date. It has shaped my career from the core. The past 25 years have been a roller coaster of experiences and learning. Sharing a few takeaways from these years 1.     Be ready to learn: Knowledge is not going to reduce. It is an asset which you will carry for your life and will help you in taking decisions. 2.     Believe in yourself: No one will trust you except your own mind. If you believe you can do it, you can. 3.     Respect your opponents: I know it is difficult, but over a period you can master this skill. They are your boosters to success. 4.     You can be down, but not out: In adverse situations, keep calm. A flustered mind cannot think rationally. Evaluate what is best for you in the situation and go ahead. 5.     Take a break: Annual leaves are for consuming, not for encashing. Your family also needs you to be with them. 6.     Develop relationships: It is always better to be know as a person and not as a role / position in the company. 7.     Never close doors: You never know when you may need to knock on it. Over the past 25 years, I have had many friends / colleagues / mentors, who have been instrumental / supportive in this journey and mentioning few will not be sufficient. Thank you to all of them. My family, parents, siblings, with their unwavering support, these years have been joyful. Looking ahead to the next 25, God willing will be enjoyable too.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠/𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫? My dad and uncle, both engineers, ignited my childhood fascination with fixing, tinkering and learning how things work. From dismantling toys to understanding bikes and engines, my curiosity grew. Initially heading to study finance at university, a last-minute decision led me to pursue a trade first. Surprisingly, I fell in love with engineering! Combining my passion for travel, I aimed for a service role, enjoying the best of both worlds. 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬/𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲? I started with a local engineering training company who focused on basic engineering training, leading to apprenticeship offers from local companies for first year students. After a practice interview, a local company hired me just 6 months into my engineering studies. Eager to learn, I seized every training opportunity, gaining electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic skills, alongside engineering qualifications. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬? I have been in engineering for 22 years, mostly as a service engineer on the road. My last 8 years of experience aligned with Fortress industries so I swiftly adapted to my role here. I started my training on the checkweighing and X-ray technologies, while broadening my knowledge of the whole product range. I have now expanded into training other service technicians, only enhancing my customer interactions and training. I am passionate about problem-solving and previous skills came in handy on a job — I was able to fix issues with a malfunctioning belt auto tracker. My expertise in belt guiding, from a previous role, allowed me to collaborate with design and resolve the problem. The success led to the customer ordering more systems. 𝐀𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤/𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬? This visit offered us an invaluable opportunity to meet with Professor Jonathan Paxman, the esteemed Head of the School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering. My conversation with Professor Paxman shed light on the cutting-edge research and educational practices that are hallmark to Curtin’s engineering programs 👍. Moreover, engaging with the engineering students themselves was nothing short of inspirational. Their enthusiasm, ambition, and eagerness to carve out impactful careers in engineering left me thoroughly impressed.
