Our coastal treasures, the Marine Reserves and Protected Areas, are vital to climate resilience, species preservation, and habitat conservation. 🌿🐠 These underwater parks intertwine conservation, science, research, and community engagement, managing our ocean resources for a sustainable future. Unfortunately, Oregon’s legislative budget for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which administers the Marine Reserve Program, has made significant cuts to the program’s budget and staffing. It's World Conservation Day! Today reminds us of the importance of protecting the land, water, and air that support the lives of all beings, human and wild. The Earth is literally sending up smoke signals and flooding our towns, pleading for our help. The good news is that we don't have to feel powerless - there are things we all can do to help and today's the perfect day to start. Here are three actions you can take: 1. For thousands of years, Native communities developed a deep connection to the land, building vast pools of knowledge and honed in on conservation methods that work. For example, Native people have long practiced the intentional setting of fires to clear underbrush, keep forests healthy, and prevent devastating wildfires. These cultural burning practices were outlawed over the last century due to Western land management agencies’ enforcement of differing practices, but they are now making a comeback thanks to advocacy efforts by Native Nations and organizations like First Nations. If we are to thrive, not just survive, on the land, we need to return to knowledge that’s Native.
