I’m closing out #WomensHistoryMonth by spotlighting our AVP and DEI leader, Sucheta Misra, who recently shared her insights in Black Enterprise Magazine 📰 Sucheta talks through the challenges that women of color face in the workplace, as well as why a lack of leadership role models results in a struggle to be authentic in their own leadership style. Disruptive Strategist | Matching Emerging Tech to Defense Needs | Transforming Organizations for the China Challenge | Growing Leaders to Navigate an Uncertain Future
Our Commission on Software-Defined Warfare is off & running! What a first day! We debated & discussed what the focus of the commission should be. We spent a lot of time trying to identify the problem to be solved, which is easier said than done. We also discussed the name of the commission, with many proposing changes. The conversation was respectful, but there were disagreements, which is a good thing. There were a few core issues: - What is intellectual property, how is it protected, and how is it used? - Should we focus on software, the technical stack that supports it, or both? - Is there a difference in how the DoD should apply dual-use software (e.g. logistics management, budgeting, predictive maintenance, etc.) vs. that which is used solely for warfighting? Much more to come!
I'm very proud of this team and the five year journey that led to this point! Assembled is a tremendous group of folks who showed up to the Atlantic Council at 0800hrs in snowy, 10 degree weather, not to be featured on some august panel, but to quietly roll up their sleeves and solve a decades long strategic issue. Thank you Mark T. Esper, Ph.D., Mung Chiang, Christine Fox, Steven Escaravage, Jim Taiclet, Tyler Sweatt, Ellen Lord, Chris Taylor, Robert Bassett Cross, Joel Meyer, Rob Murray MBA, Michael D. Brasseur, Rob Lehman, Clint Hinote, James Cartwright, Steve Bowsher, Frank Finelli, Sean Moriarty, Jack Shanahan, Jags Kandasamy, John Brennan, Stu Shea, William Mark Valentine, Jim "hondo" Geurts, Jon Gruen, Adam Hammer, Prashant Bhuyan as well as the leadership team of Clementine G. Radient authenticity, unparalleled impact, unapologetic standards of excellence and rare understanding. Leadership advice: humility, trust, documented vision; serve your team as they lead, relinquish control and don’t micromanage. Set clear deadlines. And the proof is in the pudding: An unprecedented 3,200 civil servants flying to the border to protect undocumented children; $420M in revenue for software that gave healthcare for the first time to millions. But what impressed me most? 4.5 hours of testimony defending her team that worked 24-7 to accomplish something never done before. HHS Assistant Secretary for Administration Cheryl R Campbell flew to Atlanta to support new Head Start directors, elevating the conversation around effective leadership; expressing gratitude for their commitment and care to our precious children who are the future, a future that because of Head Start and each Director, looks bright.
