WARNING: Statistically insignificant sample size to draw conclusions, but I'm gonna go ahead and do that anyway😏 I get pumped when one of the dogs at the shelter I volunteer at gets adopted. That's the whole purpose of why we do what we do. (there's been a whole bunch of forever homes found lately😊) Interestingly, and perhaps not surprisingly, the people doing the adopting are: 🐶 Dog owners looking to add to the family 🐶 People who've adopted rescues before 🐶 Folks that have gotten other dogs from our shelter 🐶 Shelter volunteers So why is that? My dumb guess is that there is: 🐕 Emotional attachment 🐕 Comfort level with the process 🐕 Belief in the outcome 🐕 Trust in our organization 🐕 A desire to be part of the solution 🐕 Joy in sharing a purpose with others Now if only there was some hidden message in here about how both nonprofit and for-profit organizations should be defining their prospects and building enduring partnerships 🤔 #nonprofits #businessdevelopment

I recently came across an interesting Q&A from Ask Amy, an advice column, where she provided some valuable and compassionate advice. The situation involved a writer who stored all their mom's belongings in their garage when moving her into assisted living. Now, the writer needs the space back, but their mom insists the items stay where they are or be returned to her (she lacks space). Ask Amy suggested a plan: The writer and their siblings could work together as a team to sort through the items, creating opportunities to relive memories with each other and with their mother. They could then distribute the desired items among each other. Once completing this process, they could relocate the remaining items to a storage facility. This approach aimed to ease the emotional burden when facing their mom's passing, offering a practical and caring solution to the dilemma. This advice was truly helpful. I'd additionally propose creating an inventory for the remaining items before storing them. Those of us in philanthropy find ourselves in Thankless and Tankless jobs. We are being asked to “move” the needle and attain unrealistic fundraising however resources are not provided (wanting more with less of everything). When gifts comes in from lovely donors it is never enough. Moves Management is a methodology not a mission. Don’t confuse the two. If I am “moving” people to give I must have a moving van full of mission, a tank full of gas and a road map for the destination.
