As 2023 wound to a close, The Wall Street Journal ran an article confirming what we saw throughout the year: the Atlanta region has become a thriving startup ecosystem. Over the past 4 years, the number of new businesses launched nationally rose continually. Many of those startups moved from the traditional coastal innovation regions to the Southeast. In Georgia in 2023, the number of new business applications filed rose 53.4% from the first 10 months of 2019, compared with a 38% national increase. And in metro Atlanta, entrepreneurs filed 75% more new business applications between 2020 and 2022 than in the three years preceeding the pandemic. The possible reasons make sense. Generally, the assumption is that the pandemic was a catalyst for entrepreneurship. In the Atlanta region specifically, the reasons include a thriving economic climate, lower housing costs than coastal innovation markets, and a comparably affordable environment to raise a family. The 2023 State of Startups in the Southeast report uncovered many of these same optimistic trends. As we get going in 2024, the national spotlight makes us even more excited about how the region is maturing to create enduring innovation businesses. #Startups #Atlanta #Entrepreneurship #Innovation #Southeast #BusinessGrowth

This The Wall Street Journal piece about the Atlanta region is making the LinkedIn rounds for good reason. Those close to our startup environment have been talking about the benefits of building here for a while. Just a few: 💲 The lower cost of living allows companies to attract talent 💼 The diverse university community fuels an intelligent, ready talent pipeline 🤝 The investment environment is incredibly startup-friendly 🌳 The quality of life is exceptional, thanks to assets like the Beltline, temperate seasons, and deep culture (to name a few) I've been an entrepreneur and mentor to entrepreneurs in Atlanta for 20 years, and I can't imagine building or supporting builders anywhere else. By the way, if you want more reasons to validate this great article, check out Metro Atlanta Chamber's Built for Business campaign. It's great. https://lnkd.in/ehK9RGXR #Atlanta #build #startups #investment #entrepreneurship

❌ I used to be protective of my ideas and it held me back. 🔒 I thought people would steal my ideas. It wasn't really until recently when I found out that THAT'S BAD. Maybe it was that I thought I knew what to do, or that I wanted some pride in not asking for help. But, it caused me to build too slowly. Here's some business growth advice I've learned over the past year. - Every Entrepreneur has their own individual ideas and goals. Most likely they're too busy / focused to be stealing other people's ideas. - Start building relationships with other Entrepreneurs, VCs, and PR professionals now. Even if you're not building anything right now, VCs and PRo pros get to hang out and learn about businesses for a living. They are a wealth of knowledge. You can also get on their radar. - There are many business resources in you local city. It's the job of these organizations to help startups / small businesses. Sometimes they are FREE too! Here are some in #WilmingtonNC UNCW CIE Network for Entrepreneurs Wilmington - Jim Roberts Wilmington Chamber of Commerce Jerry Coleman with Cape Fear Community College Genesis Block ILM Channel powered by Live Oak Bank Port City Young Professionals, LLC Here are some in North Carolina: NC IDEA CED (Council for Entrepreneurial Development) North Carolina Technology Association (NC TECH) NC SBTDC First Flight Venture Center Innovate Charlotte Launch Chapel Hill Innovate Carolina Hatch Innovation Hub Launch Greensboro Bunker Labs RIoT - Internet of Things Winston Starts Startup Grind Winston Salem Be active in your local city's startup ecosystem. Heck, show up to entrepreneurship events in other cities to support your local founders, and represent your area. Build in public. Always be learning. We can all grow together - rising tide floats all boats. . . . . . . . . #startup #entrepreneur #northcarolina #business

DevelUP Conference Panel Part Two. Last month, our Cofounder and CEO, D'Angelos Svenkeson participated in a panel at the DevelUP Conference in Chicago on “how to scale your business as an entrepreneur”. In this segment, he zero’s in on culture. When it comes to employee retention as a small firm/ business, the only way to compete with larger more established businesses is to offer something they can’t. And typically what we can offer is culture-centered i.e. comfort, open lines of communication, autonomy, etc. If you’re an entrepreneur with a growing number of employees, what attracted talent to your team and what keeps them there?
