Attitude, values and beliefs are someone's operating system like Windows, Android or iOS. Their skills are the various programmes they can install (learn) or uninstall (forget/get less good at over time if they don't use them). Changing someone's "operating system" is much harder and takes much longer and often it doesn't resolve the issue, regardless of how hard you try, as the issue is so deeply embedded in their system. Don't hire just for skills - skills can be learnt. Yes you need some "pre-installed programmes" (key skills) but the majority of the other stuff you think is essential is actually not. "Every person I bring into my team has the potential to destroy the culture we've created, so I have to be careful with every hire I make" said a CTO to me recently. This guy got it right - don't bring another unit into the system full of bugs and viruses - it can destroy the entire network. Hiring is an art, not a science...
