It’s 4th July today, #AmericanIndependenceDay and we spotlight our project at the ‘new’ American Embassy at Nine Elms, London. Our scope included concrete paving, metal works, sub-drainage, installing flood barriers, excavating a pond, and installing pond lining. Four internal garden areas were also installed, which included the waterproofing, high quality Italian limestone cladding, concrete paving to the service forecourt, construction of foundations to the street furniture, and the installation of gabion baskets, all of which were installed through high quality workmanship. In carrying out these works we followed a number of extensive security measures to meet the United States Embassy’s strict requirements. These included ensuring all employees undergo a 90-day induction process before arriving on site and the implementation of a 48-hour booking system. Furthermore, all products and materials on-site were subject to a 30-day vetting process.

Quality checks such as recording ground level and marking of reference points should be done. Excavation is the process of moving earth, rock or other materials with tools, equipment or explosives. Ever wondered what are these blind walls without windows and doors? I just learned these are fire walls (Brandmauer) built to prevent spreading of fire from one building onto another. Fire walls isolate fires within the building similar to how watertight compartments isolate water in ships and submarines preventing them from sinking. Building laws specify how fire walls are constructed. Here are some basic requirements (from wikipedia): • Fire walls must be fire-resistant and made of non-combustible building materials (such as concrete and masonry). • The load-bearing capacity and stability of fire walls must be maintained even under additional mechanical stress during the fire (for a defined period of time). • Fire walls must be sufficiently thick and arranged one above the other throughout all floors (deviations possible if fire ceilings are present). • Fire walls must extend into the roof area (or even beyond). • Fire walls must not be interrupted by combustible building materials or have cavities. • Openings in external fire walls are not permitted. Openings in internal fire walls must be specially sealed off (see fire protection closure ). Edit: as Uliana Sirotina pointed out, some of the firewalls on the attached pictures probably became exposed as a result of WWII bombings and the following demolition of the adjacent buildings.

Indeed paints or coatings based on hydrocarbon based polymers can be extremely dangerous for buildings! Being combustible they spread fire rapidly. While simultaneously emitting obnoxious toxic gases, pollution, long term health risks and ofcourse irreversible damage to the environment!. In the aftermath of fire incidents, the investigation is generally focused on the cause of fire. The materials that spread the fire, kill occupants, cause collosal destruction need some serious attention as well! The worst blaze I have ever seen so far. Fortunately, the building was not finished and occupied yet. Update. Some early findings : - building construction was ceased and there are no casualties reports so hopefully all site workers were away. - the cause of fire spread is Bitumen base coating that they use as part of facade for water proofing in Russia. Fortunately, we don't use it here.
