Behaviour Change Consultant I Mindful Business Communications Specialist I Helping teams boost productivity through happiness, reduced anxiety, training and communications that gets you noticed
Fascinating article in Fast Company this week that slams a focus on self care to champion instead caring for others. While I am a big fan of the science of wellbeing, here is one example of where the 'science' gives a misleading view that isn't connected to real life situations. I totally agree that in workplace wellbeing prioritising self over the team can indeed be selfish, but there's a balance even in this. Coming in to work when you are sick, won't help you or anyone else. Taking a 'self-care' day can revitalise your work and your focus and therefore productivity. Truly effective workplace wellbeing only works when it is a whole organisation response - not just something that benefits a limited view - that said some of the best workplace wellbeing plans have support that works for both the whole team, and addresses the needs of the individual. One fabulous scheme we set up changed small bonuses of £100 per employee which felt a bit weak into a self care treat where each staff member could choose (from a list of recommended health suggestions) how to spend their money. For some it was cost towards a private GP consultation, for another an appointment with a physiotherapist, another a reiki treatment, another a massage, another payment towards their football club membership. Everyone felt more valued with choice - and rather than being selfish - it made them more connected as a team. The clear difference is that this wasn't their only tactic towards wellbeing - they also put in place clear processes, communication and support with everything from the day-to-day to specific support structures to cover the 'team' as well as the 'me'. What this article forgets too is how work is just part of the picture, it's how the balance translates back at home and in the flexibility between our working and our home lives and the power we have over the choices we make for our health and happiness. What do you do in your workplace for wellness? Do you take a whole place wellbeing approach or focus more on personal self care? Love your thoughts. https://lnkd.in/e8EetbpT #selfcare #wellbeingatwork #workplacewellbeing #careforothers #rewardsandrecognition
