Yosimar Reyes is part of a growing community of "carefluencers" using social media to bring caregiving out of the shadows. With over 20K Instagram followers, Yosimar shares his care journey for his grandmother Mardonia, from driving her to appointments to managing her medications. For me, his story brings to life some important trends in caregiving worth noting: 💡Young people are a vital segment of the caregiving community. There are more than 3 million Gen-Z caregivers navigating care responsibilities. 💡Caregiving among men is becomingly increasing visible. Nearly 2 in 5 family caregivers are men. 💡Caregivers of color - particularly Latinos - are more likely to live in multigenerational households. 💡LGBTQ identified caregivers are more likely to report being the primary caregiver of their loved one. Above all Yosimar's story reminds me that care is a sacred bond that connects generations. I'm happy to see National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP research help inform this fantastic profile of "carefluencers" in The New York Times. It's a worthwhile read for folks interested in how young people are shaping the future of caregiving. 🌈 Celebrating Pride Month in Healthcare! 🌈 Every June, we honor Pride Month, a time to celebrate and support our LGBTQIA colleagues and patients. As nurses, we can make a difference by fostering inclusivity and understanding. Here are five ways to embrace Pride Month: 1. Educational Lunch-and-Learns: Host sessions on LGBTQ health disparities and diversity. Invite guest speakers to equip staff with knowledge for compassionate care. 2. Rainbow Decor and Dress Days: Wear rainbow pins and decorate workspaces. Show visible support for diversity and acceptance. 3. Volunteer for LGBTQ Health Initiatives: Engage actively by volunteering at LGBTQ clinics or community centers. Understand their needs and demonstrate empathy. 4. Pride-Themed Wellness Activities: Organize yoga or mindfulness sessions. Discuss LGBTQ health topics like stress management and discrimination. 5. Year-Round Support: Extend inclusivity beyond June. Offer ongoing training, form diversity committees, and spotlight different LGBTQ health topics monthly. Let’s create a welcoming environment that champions rights and well-being! 🌟👩⚕️💙 #PrideMonth #Inclusivity #nurseu #nurseuagency #nursingagency #nurses #carers

What does #DisabilityInclusion mean to you? According to the World Health Organization (WHO) an estimated 1.3 billion people – or 1 in 6 people worldwide – experience significant disability. People living with disabilities are all around us. We see them every day, so why do we not work every day towards making our spaces disability #inclusive? Why do we consciously or unconsciously exclude and even discriminate against people living with disabilities? I sat down with Pelemo Nyajo, a multidisciplinary creative and disability rights activist, to talk about activism and disability inclusion, amongst other things. Pelemo shares her story of living with a disability in Nigeria and her journey learning to live with Fibrous Dysplasia. ________ On a more personal note, I had finished editing and exporting this video, and I went on the disability with pel Instagram to see if there would be any useful links to add to the description when I came across a video she made about how we should make an effort to personalize inclusion in everything that we do. I watched it through till the end and scrolled past; then, something hit me: I had yet to include captions in the video! Confession: I do not like editing captions; I think they are very stressful (yes, I edit all my YouTube videos, and my neck and back aren’t happy about it) - but I realized that adding captions to my videos is a way to make it accessible to more demographics of people! I realized that if I really wanted to practice inclusion and not just yap about it, it had to start with ‘little’ things like adding captions to my videos. So went back to my editing app, spent hours editing and including the captions, and re-exporting. If my doing so makes my video accessible to even one more person, then I am happy doing so not just for this video but for the next ones as well! Just 2.2% of speaking characters in top movies released last year were portrayed as having a #disability. At a time when over one-quarter of the United States population reports having a disability, this low level of #disabilityrepresentation is not enough. We know that representation matters and true representation occurs when folks truly know and understand disability. #CertifiedRehabilitationCounselors work daily on and off the clock as key disability advocates. With CRCs expanding into new and emerging work settings, hopefully, we will see an increase in discourse, representation, and understanding of disability.

Looking back on the year like, "Did I really survive all that plot twist and chaos?" 😅🤯 It's been a rollercoaster, but here I am – a survivor with a dash of wit intact. Everyone deserves affordable access to the contraceptive method that works best for them. That’s why it’s a huge milestone that Opill—the first-ever over-the-counter birth control pill—became available in the US this year. This was made possible due to the tireless efforts of the Free the Pill Coalition and many others! Due to systemic inequities, barriers to birth control fall harder on marginalized communities. Making Opill available over the counter could significantly increase contraceptive access for Black, Brown and Indigenous communities; people living with low incomes; young people; LGBTQ folks; people with disabilities; immigrants and more. But the work isn’t over yet. Now that Opill is available on shelves and online nationwide, we must keep fighting to ensure that it’s accessible. That means: Fully covered by insurance Low and no cost options Stocked nationwide without barriers We need policymakers to take concrete steps to make this happen and ensure equitable access for all. Family comes in many forms and everyone’s path to parenthood is uniquely different. No matter those differences, anyone who struggles to build a family should have equal access to whatever option they choose, including the LGBTQ community. Here, we have created a hub of resources specific to family building for LGBTQ families/couples. These resources unpack your choices, current state and federal legislation that impacts access, and how to make family building affordable. https://lnkd.in/gAHsbaFP
