Commuting is changing. With the broad acceptance of the value of the alternative to being in the office, how do you get where you're going in the morning? (Some may be donning slippers and working from home.)
1. A 25-mile commute costs $20k after taxes, about $28,500 pre-tax - that's 25% of a $100k job, but only 8.3% if you make $300k. Commuting punishes the middle class, plus gas taxes.
2. Commute time is about 1.0 - 2.5 depending on the day - what is your time worth to you, and to your family?
3. With all the climate change concerns, doesn't it just make sense to work from home and not pollute everyday driving (even EVs pollute indirectly from their energy sources).
How do you get there now?
Personal and Career Coaching - supporting you in beautifying your inner landscape through healing of trauma and knocking down old paradigms of self-perception. What life do you really want to live?
I love that my employer has the foresight to encourage wfh 4 days of the week. I am so much more productive. And am incredibly fortunate that on my one day of office work I grab my lunchbox and walk 1 block to work. 💕
Thanks for sharing Will Scott 👏🏻 If you’re happy with remote work, you’re not going back to the office...
1. We all want more time to do things that bring value and happiness to our lives.
2. We all want to feel connected to others socially.

This is the cost of commuting daily... 🚂
On families, not employees 👨👩👧👦
I have two kids. A son and a daughter.
They'll come into this later...
In the UK, the average commute is over an hour each way ⌛️
Mine was previously ~90 minutes door to door.
That's three hours a day spent commuting 🥱
Or 15 hours a week.
Assume you work for 47 weeks of the year 🗓️
That's ~235 daily commutes.
That's an incredible 705 hours of commuting every year 😒
Lets put a cost on that, and bring my kids back into it...
Each year by not commuting, I have the choice of spending >50 waking days worth of time with my kids ❤️
Or, by the time they turn 18...
Over TWO years worth of time with them 🤯
👉🏼 Two years 👈🏼
That's two years with my kids, rather than on a train or sitting in traffic.
That is the cost of commuting.
That is the benefit of enabling people to work anywhere.
You cannot put a price on that.
Forget the cost of commuting.
Forget the water cooler moments.
Forget the extra money spent on my bills.
This is what remote and flexible work enables.
It's not just about the employee. It's about families too.
So the next time you consider a RTO mandate. Think about how incredible it would be to have had extra time with your kids, your partner, your parents.
Think about the thing you taking away from people - time.
We can all make money again.
We can't get time back though.

It takes ONE decision to take control of your commuting costs.
We often don’t realize how much we’re spending every day just to get to the office. But once you break it down, the numbers can be surprising.
IT CAN BE YOU.
You just need to take the first step and track those costs.
JUST DO IT.
I’ve watched people completely shift their spending habits—by calculating their fuel use, choosing alternative transportation, or even cutting down on commute days.
People focus on what matters to them.
Let’s figure out the real cost of your commute, and how you can start saving today!

One major problem is that "staff strength" (that is how many employees you have regardless of redundancies) is a major sign of success; though this is not necessarily accurate for many industries. Ok maybe you have 10,000 employees, but half of them are not necessary and are simply helping a hiring manager or department manager use up their budget so it doesn't get reduce for the following financial year. In the case of Swiggy and Zomato this has been a major issue for years. Salaries are very good but the quality of the teams vary widely. This creates "competition" that is kind of artificial and spurs fear in employees who end up being job-scared working themselves to the bone. Commute times are very long in India for all types of staff. I recall having a high-level director in food-retail industry that commutes almost 80 km per day in his own vehicle so he give his family nice housing, some tranquility and amenities not available or attainable in central Mumbai despite his high-performance and seniority. Unfortunately, public transport is still in the building phase in most major cities in India so getting to and from work is a job in itself. Worse, these huge companies who have a lot of cash and are profitable refuse to invest in their employees by chipping in with their tech-park neighbors or the localities and public works to build those better roads, create more access points to what public transportation there is, and at least make a little tiny bit less difficult to get to and from work.
People have to make huge sacrifices to their health and family-life because of unscrupulous management plus some colleague willing to do the same thing who produces almost nothing with less experience and no proven results. The message is you are replaceable and then someone else just like you picks up the slack; not necessarily the person who is replacing you. It's nuts.

I wish employers understood that commuting in 40-degree heat every day hurts productivity, cutting it in half. Not everyone lives 5 minutes away. We should be able to work from home without fearing our efficiency will be questioned. 😓😓
5 Day Work Week is Actually 9 Hour Work Day. Those in support staff like peons and guards have it worst because they can only afford to live 1 hour away and more. If you have 2 hours of Commute (coming and going), 9 Hours of Work, 8 Hours of Sleep, 1 Hour of Eating/Chewing, 1 Hour of Bath and other cleaning, You only have 3 hours of life. This is stressful for any family with kids. These long days for 5 days a week and 6th would be to cool off really, there are many household trappings that this level, you don't order things from apps and they appear due to premium. Now only one day off but you know it is tomorrow morning you have to go to office. You can feel the pull even on the off day. Life is harsh. I am thinking about HRs and CEOs who write JDs to work from Delhi. It has to be ignorance and trappings that keep them there and compel others to be there too (like home loans, other customers that are there, good schools and hospitals). Some do it for real reasons like very confidential things that need to happen in person (like national security). But here is the deal: cities don't grow due to population growth, couples on average have lesser number of kids than themselves. TFR is below replacement for cities ("Cities are child sinks" as someone said). Some want to escape from hometowns, some want to live where they can escape consequences by keep on shifting companies. Whatever maybe the reason, cities grow because new people come to it. I am not sure if things remain as they are, people would want to. NVIDIA is third biggest company in the world, fully remote in office work. Zoho is desi made startup but is remote native. We are only noting down what is happening. In 10 days monsoon will be there. Peons and Security Guards will walk on flooded streets to reach office, sometimes to fall in ditches and fall off from trains because they have to be on time. No one can have compassion. No one is allowed to have compassion. Remote work gives a way out for even executives to escape gas chambers called Indian Cities. Just a thought #RemoteWorkNationalism

With changing times, corporations need to mold their policies accordingly. Work from home is a brainchild of Covid-19 but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Today’s workforce majorly comprises of millenials and gen-z’s and as one myself we value comfort over anything else. Our productivity increases when we are in a familiar environment and are comfortable. It is important for companies to promote a hybrid mode of work environment.

IS YOUR COMPANY LOOKING FOR A BETTER ALTERNATIVE FOR A CLEAN COMMUTE STIPEND?
Some employers now have a Clean Commute Stipend as part of their compensation. Its a great idea in theory, but for most taking a bus, train, bike, or walk to work is not a realistic or convenient option.

To commute or not to commute? 💀💭
For many of us, this is a question we have had to answer at some point.
Personally, I commute over 300 km daily to and from school, but thanks to a direct train connection 🚆 which takes only about 1:10h one way, so it's not as bad as it sounds.
What's more, I can do all my school and personal stuff in the train, leaving me with more free time when I am home.
But let's be real 😅, I'm quite looking forward to shortening the commute to 'mere' 10 kilometers soon.
One can only handle waking up for 8 am lectures at 5:30 and missing out on the social stuff for so long...
