The most comprehensive guide for corporate investors and financial institutions to understand how and why to invest in high-integrity Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) has just been launched. I am very proud of the role that the ERM Sustainability Institute as played alongside others such as WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, to achieve this. It is these kind of initiatives that will drive the investable, sustainable change we all need to see to combat the harmful effects of climate change. Alexander Cox, Sabine Hoefnagel
I am delighted to have joined colleagues and close business partners this week at the launch of ‘Natural Climate Solutions for the Voluntary Carbon Market,’ part of #LCAW2024. Together with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Natural Climate Solutions Alliance and Forest Investor Club (FIC), our ERM Sustainability Institute has launched the most comprehensive guide to date to help corporate investors and financial institutions understand how and why to invest in high-integrity Natural Climate Solutions (NCS). The guide looks at the questions that investors should ask, familiar challenges they may face, and examples of best practices across several stages of the NCS investment process, including: ✔ Building the business case for investment. ✔ Identifying investment types, structures, and associated stakeholders. ✔ Conducting effective due diligence. ✔ Determining a fair and equitable revenue-sharing agreement. ✔ Integrating legal considerations. ✔ Implementing systems for measuring, reporting, and verifying data. Nature conservation and nature-based solutions are set to play a vital role in the fight against climate change. However, a significant nature financing gap exists, particularly from private funding. NCS can help bridge this gap by providing investors attractive returns and benefits while delivering positive climate, environmental, and social impacts. Congratulations to all involved in putting this guide together. I am positive it will be of enormous value to all those exploring the full NCS investment journey. SBTI and Carbon offsets finally meet their way. The Science Based Targets initiative recently introduced the Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM) framework through two detailed whitepapers. This framework is a significant milestone as it officially recognizes the role of carbon credits in climate strategy beyond neutralization. By encompassing various types of climate action, including carbon credits, BVCM offers a flexible approach for companies to align with sustainability standards and accelerate climate solutions. SBTi's partnership with nonprofit and U.N. groups underscores its influence in shaping corporate sustainability standards and holds considerable sway in the corporate sustainability landscape. BVCM presents a compelling case for contributing to carbon removal, highlighting its potential to mitigate climate risk, secure investments, and align with consumer preferences for sustainability. While BVCM is not mandatory, it offers companies an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in climate action and support the transition to net-zero emissions. Overall, BVCM represents a significant advancement in climate action, providing companies with a roadmap to contribute meaningfully to climate solutions. With SBTi's support, companies can leverage carbon credits and other climate investments to accelerate progress towards a sustainable future. We help companies integrate nature solutions into their sustainability strategies. If you have questions regarding BVCM and carbon credits, you can get in touch with us. #sustainability #carboncredits #SBTI #climateaction #carbonremoval #nature

Helping companies achieve their sustainability goals through nature-based solutions | Business Advisor
This are amazing news. Until now, corporates engaged with Science Based Targets initiative could only use carbon credits for residual emissions and only after they have done all their effort in avoiding and reducing emissions. Now it changes. Climate and nature action is considered as a way to accelerate their journey to net-zero. Furthermore, corporates could parallelize efforts between reduction and removal to meet their environmental goals. Although it is voluntary, I believe it is a matter of time until regulations catch up in this direction. #esg #sustainability #carboncredits #sbti

Nature plays a critical role in fighting climate change... However, a significant gap exists when it comes to nature financing. A healthy and dynamic market for Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) that improve the management and protection for nature to mitigate climate change while also delivering biodiversity and social benefits is essential. NCS projects offer returns based on the carbon credits they generate. ERM has, together with ERM Sustainability Institute, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Natural Climate Solutions Alliance and Forest Investor Club (FIC), developed a guide to support companies and investors with the goal to demystifying and de-risking NCS investments. Key highlights: 💡 NCS Projects can be complex; plan accordingly 💡 Match your investment plan with your risk profile and preferences 💡 Conduct thorough and context-specific due dilligence 💡 Recognizing and supporting the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPs & LCs) is a must 💡 Sharing revenue with local communities is vital 💡 High-integrity NCS projects require high-quality monitoring Read the full report for more details on NCS projects: https://lnkd.in/dMC4vXW8 #CarbonMarkets #SocialImpacts #VoluntaryCarbonMarket #NaturePositive #Biodiversity

The [much-anticipated] Science Based Targets initiative’s recent Beyond Value Chain Mitigation paper sends a strong message 💪: “The world 🌍 is dangerously close to passing the 1.5°C threshold, beyond which humanity [is] exposed to existential and irreversible negative impacts …[so] it is [] important to catalyze private sector finance to mitigate emissions that occur beyond corporate value chains” So what does this really mean for our clients and partners? The second part of the paragraph above says it all. We need the private sector to act, and act now. 🌲 🐨 #climateaction How we catalyse private sector finance is being increasingly referred to as Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (#BVCM) and is recognised as a key part of any robust and holistic climate strategy. BVCM covers more than just carbon credits, it also includes funding start ups and supporting biodiversity projects among others. Having said that, buying carbon credits is a great option to demonstrate your commitments and support on-the-ground climate action, and is the preferred approach by the SBTi and the business community. Starting with the business case for BVCM, developing your quality criteria for carbon credits and identifying how you want to take action will set you up for success. We suggest aligning any BVCM activity with your broader #sustainability goals, your company’s vision, and the UN’s #SDGs for maximum #impact. 🐧 🐼 I am personally excited by the SBTi’s guidance and welcome the clear messaging on the need for companies to invest outside their value chain, as well as #decarbonising their operations. Now I am hopeful we see companies take action to reduce the catastrophic impacts on us, our children and future generations. 🚸 👼 South Pole can develop your #BVCM strategy and also support you in communicating your actions, so get in touch to hear how we can help you. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) recently released two insightful reports in February, shedding light on a critical area of climate action: Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM). In simpler terms, BVCM is about taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions not just within a company's own operations, but also outside of them, including initiatives that remove or reduce emissions across the globe. SBTi is encouraging businesses to broaden their efforts beyond their immediate supply chains to tackle climate change more effectively. They're advocating for these external actions to represent a significant portion of a company's emission reduction strategy, suggesting these efforts should at least account for over half of their total emission reductions. Moreover, SBTi emphasizes the importance of having these claims independently verified, ensuring credibility and real impact. At CarbonLeap, this endorsement from SBTi aligns perfectly with our vision. We see a clear shift towards embracing carbon insetting through a book and claim model, a move we believe will fast-track the decarbonization of supply chains. The growing recognition of this method by industry leaders is a promising sign. It signifies that the adoption of book and claim models is on the horizon, paving the way for a more impactful approach to achieving net-zero emissions. #CarbonInsetting #ClimateAction #Sustainability #NetZeroAmbition #Impact
