I was asked today, "What's the best part about being an independent professional?" The answer is simple: The opportunity to work with organizations like CARBIOS. A brief diversion to understand what you're looking at in the press release below. The company has developed an enzyme that, when mixed into PLA before it's extruded/shaped/molded into their final form, will allow that plastic to biodegrade into compost within a matter of weeks in commercially available facilities. There's much more to it than that, but that's the big idea. This is a **game-changing** #innovation. I respect the earnestness of #environmental activists; I think their heart is in the right place, but often, their solutions are (at best) wishful thinking. Case in point, in our rush to demonize plastics, we forget how utterly transformative they've been to our lives—improving the human condition in myriad ways. Unfortunately, plastics have very real downsides and long-term costs. We must mitigate and eliminate those downsides, while retaining the benefits plastics can offer. Companies like CARBIOS are developing ways to rethink our relationship with polymers, changing the cost/benefit equation in humanities favor. Is this enzyme the "magic bullet" that will solve all our environmental challenges? Of course, not. But Nature Magazine seems to think it's a big deal, and I agree. This represents the kind of hard work and creative thinking that will form a key part of the #sustainability mix into the future. It was good catching up with our project parnters from BioSPRINT - Biorefining of sugars via process intensification last week in Nicosia. Many thanks to our hosts eBOS for excellent organisiation. This time we had an opportunity to show results on economic feasibility of biorefining concepts considering process intensification principles. We have shown promising opportunities to make competitive value chemicals, such as furans, from hemicellulose using process intensification principles. Maturus Optimi Industrial Consulting

W-BioCat (www.wbiocat.com) is a new consortium of leading labs and SMEs supported by the European Innovation Council to transform chemical #catalysis. The chemical industry is dominated by polluting and energy-intensive processes. By contrast, nature provides us with myriads of cheap and powerful catalysts for a wide range of desirable transformations. The problem is that many of these natural catalysts — known as #enzymes — are not suitable for work in research labs or industrial settings. The W-BioCat project will take on a chemical-production challenge that currently can only be addressed with significant energy and waste: the reduction of carboxylic acids. A group of unique enzymes that contain the heavy metal element tungsten (W) can perform this important reaction but are difficult to produce on a suitable scale. Our team at Delft University of Technology, led by Peter-Leon Hagedoorn, Caroline E. Paul, and Frank Hollmann, will address the challenges for the scalable production of W-enzymes. Together with bioinformatics input from Claudia Andreini of Università degli Studi di Firenze we will identify key enzymes that are necessary for economical and low-waste transformation of carboxylic acids. Together with our partners Kylie Vincent University of Oxford and the company HydRegen, we will explore possibilities for a biocatalytic H2-driven reduction process as a sustainable alternative for current chemocatalytic approaches. And with our partners in Sarel Fleishman’s lab at Weizmann Institute of Science and enzyme engineering expertise from the company EvoEnzyme, will optimize these enzymes’ activity and production yields to demonstrate preparative-scale production of valuable aldehydes and alcohols for the #cosmetics, #flavor, and #fragrance industries. The European companies ChainCraft, Axxence, and Evonik will advise the consortium on the path to the commercialization of our innovations. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, our project will design composites with optimal mechanical strength and carefully tuned biodegradability, incorporating interpenetrating network hydrogels, nanostructured bioglasses, and calcium phosphates with the addition of various ions.
