Some interesting technology for #DOC - ‘Direct Ocean Capture’ which takes carbon out of seawater, allowing the ocean to take in more carbon from the air. The smart thing - just like #BlueCarbon - no chemicals or materials chucked into the sea. Who knows - there may be a day when Dr Ana Novak and Steve Oldham work together with complimentary DOC technology. #carboncapture #carbonreduction

Needless to say - we agree with Eric's conclusion! Erik Kobayashi-Solomon provides a good summary of Captura's technology and its potential in this article. Showing potential to change the carbon capture arena with a fundamental transformative technology approach.

A recent study published in Science reveals the significant impact of landfill point source emissions on methane levels. https://buff.ly/3W3gHy3 Led by Carbon Mapper scientists and researchers from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the study offers insights for targeted mitigation efforts. It is the largest assessment of its kind in the waste sector to date. Major emission sources not accounted for in traditional methods are identified. One of these is Landfill point source emissions, highlighted as crucial for addressing methane emissions from waste. Remote sensing tools, like those used by the Carbon Mapper Coalition satellite program, play a key role. They enable accurate measurement and understanding of landfill emissions, which allows for better-informed mitigation strategies. Yet-Ming Chiang is a longtime professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and he’s also a co-founder of two of the most well-known climate tech companies right now: Form Energy, which is developing long duration energy storage systems, and Sublime Systems, which is commercializing cement made with electrochemistry. He's also just turned 66 and when he was 65, he co-founded three new climate tech companies, all of which are still in relative stealth mode: One in electric aviation, one in lithium extraction from hard rock resources and another involving the stimulation of geologic hydrogen. We just proved that Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement is safe and effective… … at very small scale. Last week, Nature Communications Earth and Environment published a paper by scientists from Plymouth Marine Labs Applications detailing the results of our 2022 project - one of the first small scale Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement field trials. The key takeaways were: - Adding alkalinity (in this case, magnesium hydroxide) to wastewater converts the CO2 in the wastewater into dissolved carbonates and bicarbonates, thus reducing the amount of CO2 that would otherwise be emitted to the atmosphere. - This provides a proxy for the measurement of carbon removal in the ocean - The effect on ocean chemistry was barely detectable right at point of addition to the ocean (within 5 meters) and undetectable beyond that, - This confirmed the predicted, rapid dilution of the alkalized water below detection limits once discharged to the ocean, indicating the need for ocean modeling to estimate dispersal and any subsequent removal of CO2 from air. - All measured chemical effects stopped once the addition stopped, providing a clear “exit strategy” for the process This is a groundbreaking result, demonstrating that the process’ impacts, and therefore risks, are highly localized and temporary and clearly showing the positive effects of Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement. It provides strong confidence in our ability to incrementally and carefully scale up the technology.
