Wentworth Institute of Technology recently announced a comprehensive redevelopment plan for its 31-acre campus in Mission Hill and Fenway. The plan aims to modernize and expand its facilities over the next decade. The project includes the construction of 3 new residence halls (adding 935 net new beds), development of a new quad, an athletics field house, and a welcome center. The plan also features new homes for the schools of architecture and design, engineering, and management. These initiatives are part of an ambitious institutional master plan submitted to the Boston Planning & Development Agency that reflects Wentworth's commitment to enhancing its campus environment for learning, community building, and accommodating the anticipated growth in student population. Investment in existing campus facilities grew more than 26% year over year in 2023 and is up by one-third since 2021, according to the latest report from building intelligence firm Gordian. In its report, Gordion called last year’s spike in spending “a remarkable shift,” indicating that campus leaders are devoting resources and attention to maintaining their existing facilities, and that they recognize “the value of physical assets to the campus experience.” That’s the good news. The bad news is that inflation in construction services and building supplies has grown significantly over the same period, and a large gap still exists between need and spending on maintaining facilities.

Renovate, Baby, Renovate! “Mixed use” is the future of higher ed. Better utilization of tax-payer-funded and tuition-payer-funded buildings is paramount. Every board and president ought to be asking about the effective and efficient use of facilities. If it’s an empty building and a “dead mall,” how can we make it vibrant and busy, get more students here?
