With every person in need, the CIS team follow a process that is designed to ensure effective and respectful support. When the intervention specialists first meet someone, either from a referral or by patrolling the system, they get to know them to understand their needs. From there, they’ll begin a specialized process based on what the individual needs, which may involve other community partners, like the City of Austin Downtown Austin Community Court (DACC). “The main partnership we have with them is using their address for mail, which is… a huge barrier for a lot of our clients for getting through the whole process of any kind of services,” said Holly Winge. Our CIS team also partners with the DACC for cases that our team can’t fulfill, or that helps persons with misdemeanors navigate the municipal court to address the charges if they qualify. A few days ago, HiiL | User-friendly Justice organized a very interesting event on community justice solutions. As my dear former professor Meg Satterthwaite, current UN Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, noted, 1.5 billion people lack meaningful access to justice for pressing everyday problems. Usually, this justice gap impacts the most those who are economically and socially disadvantaged. There are not enough judges and lawyers to close this gap, and often, a legal avenue is not even the best strategy to solve numerous issues. As many panellists stressed, instead in focusing only in lawyers and formal judicial systems, we should put people, communities, and their needs at the heart of the justice debate. It is crucial to democratise access to justice and empower communities to lead justice initiatives that can address issues better and strengthen the social fabric.
Well that was brilliant. Here are three key takeaways from our webinar ‘’Unlocking Community Justice Solutions: Scaling up for National Impact.’’ 1. Let's give Community Justice Systems the recognition they deserve. They need support, status, and the jurisdiction to build relevant partnerships. 2. It's time for formal justice systems and personnel to learn from customary and community justice systems. Judges can lead transformative change as system improvers and connectors between communities and the formal system. 3. Scaling up programmes will make them more effective, less expensive in the long run - and will shrink the Justice Gap. A huge thank you to all our amazing speakers: 🗣 Ms Jhoana Delgado Gaitán, Meg Satterthwaite, Tatyana Teplova, PhD, Annette Mbogoh, Hon. Justice Joel Ngugi, Hon. Justice Olugboyega Ogunfowora, Milkii Mekuria, and Sam Muller; as well as our very engaged audience. Stay tuned - we will be sharing an outcomes agenda for action on scaling community justice soon! And we hope to see you all again at the next webinar. #BetterJusticeBetterWorld

👏 great step forward for these nine communities! Locking up kids is never the answer. Time to pursue alternative, proven policy solutions.Time to put the wellbeing of children first. Find out more about our evidence-based framework for child wellbeing at www.aracy.org.au
Huge news! We've announced nine communities that will benefit from the largest commitment to justice reinvestment ever delivered by the commonwealth. Justice reinvestment is a long-term, community-led approach to preventing crime, improving community safety and reducing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and children in custody. It empowers First Nations communities and leaders to develop local solutions to divert people who are at risk away from the criminal justice system. We're committed to working in partnership with communities, because we know lasting change needs to be community-led. This is just one way that we're delivering practical action that makes a difference in Indigenous communities.

The New Blue fellowship programme in the US is looking to empower “forward-thinking” front-line officers with the skills, awareness and support to develop innovative solutions around engagement and public trust that can address issues identified in the communities they serve, as programme Executive Director Kristin Daley explained to Policing Insight’s Christine T.. ❝What this looks like in practice is an innovative hybrid model of fellowship and incubator-style working. Officers present their idea and then join the programme, with the end result being the creation of a solution that addresses an issue in their community.❞ ❝There is a lot of interest in this program, and there is a lot of support for it – not only financial support, but in terms of connections and us shaping our curriculum.❞ - Kristin Daley, Executive Director, New Blue ❝By developing a program that caters to African American youth in the most deprived areas of Los Angeles, Ofc Walker believes LAPD can foster an environment that supports the community, builds their confidence, and provides tools they need to be successful in life and in a potential career in law enforcement.❞ ❝I really want to emphasise how we think about police-community trust, and building a shared vision of what public safety means. I think it’s really important that officers coming into our program do it with an eye toward what the community wants.❞ - Kristin Daley, Executive Director, New Blue https://lnkd.in/eFWC3xxJ #lawenforcement #policing #police #communitypolicing
