Next week is our annual ‘Big Practice Review.’ This is a chance to reflect on progress towards our collective goals as well as looking to opportunities that lie ahead. In preparation, we will be refocussing on HUT’s ethos over a series of posts, starting with our approach to the built environment. HUT defines transformation as the cultivation, re-imagination and enhancement of existing buildings, spaces and sites in order to enrich the lives of their users and leave a positive environmental legacy. Our approach isn’t limited by typology, scale or location. Four values underpin everything we engage with - be that buildings, ideas or idealology. Our values guide our decision-making, design development, language, narrative and position within the profession.

One of the most overlooked yet critical parts of running a real estate development company is the on-site presence of senior management. I have made it a habit to visit our construction sites, together with our most senior leadership figures, at least 4-5 times a week. I find this crucial not only in ensuring that our development efforts adhere to our set construction timelines and even more importantly, our stringent quality standards, but also for motivational purposes, and to foster a hands-on work environment where quality control and innovation are central, and where we lead by example. Real estate is one of the – if not the – most physical, tangible lines of work. We don’t merely construct buildings – we develop entire lifestyles. Our buildings are homes where tens of thousands of lives are enriched, and to develop these to the highest standards, we have to think and work beyond our desks.
