Today, we celebrate 🌟Juneteenth🌟, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. This day may be tough for some, as we reflect on our painful past. But it's also an opportunity to acknowledge the progress we have made, and the work that remains to be done. On this historic day, which coincides with 🌱Wellness Wednesday🌱, let's celebrate our progress and commit to continuing the fight for equality and justice for all. Not sure how? Here's some ideas: 🤓 Educate Yourself and Others. Learn about the history and significance of Juneteenth. Share this knowledge with friends, family, and colleagues. 🫶🏽 Support Black-Owned Businesses. Make a conscious effort to support Black entrepreneurs and their businesses today. 👩🏾🤝👨🏻 Attend Events. Participate in local or virtual Juneteenth celebrations, including parades, concerts, and educational events. 🤔 Reflect and Discuss. Have open conversations about the significance of Juneteenth and the ongoing struggle for racial equality. 👋🏽 Volunteer. Engage with organizations that focus on racial justice and community support. 📖 Read and Share. Read books, watch documentaries, and share resources that highlight Black history and culture. ✊🏽 Advocate for Change. Support policies and initiatives that promote racial equity and justice. 💰 Donate. Contribute to charities and organizations dedicated to civil rights and the empowerment of Black communities. 💥 Mentor and Empower. Provide mentorship and support to young Black individuals in your community. 🎉 Celebrate Culturally. Enjoy and learn from Black cultural expressions through music, art, and cuisine. By engaging in these activities, we can honor Juneteenth, care for ourselves, support others, and contribute to a more equitable society. 🌟 As Black History Month is coming to an end, we're shining a spotlight on the partnerships and nonprofits that joined us in championing awareness about racism, resistance, and unity over the past weeks. We kicked off with an engaging talk by CultureAlly, delving into American Black history, what it means to be anti-racist and an ally, and recognizing influential leaders of the Black resistance. Throughout the month, we encouraged employees to donate to non-profits making a difference, with Brevo also contributing to these great organizations. We’re excited to support: 💻 Black Girls Code, empowering girls of color (aged 7-25) with coding skills and confidence. Together, we're bridging racial and gender gaps in tech, fostering diversity and innovation. ✊🏽 CEE Centre for Young Black Professionals , addressing economic and social challenges for Black youth in the Greater Toronto Area through workforce development, education, and advocacy. For more on their impactful initiatives, check out their profiles! We concluded the month by spotlighting and promoting black-owned businesses across our network in Canada and the US. But the commitment doesn't stop here! As part of our Brevolve program, we've initiated mandatory employee training on "Promoting Diversity and Inclusion and Combating Discrimination." “Despite their leadership, Black women’s contributions are often ignored and their initiatives remain poorly funded. If we are to successfully navigate the intersecting crises we face today—including rising authoritarianism, inequality, and climate change—donors must better support their vital leadership.” Writing in Alliance magazine, our deputy CEO Brandee M. Butler explains how and why donors should direct more flexible funding to Black women-led organizations and elevate the critical contributions of their activism. Embracing Love in Action ❤️ Inspired by bell hooks' insights into the role of love in catalyzing social change, this year's Black Philanthropy Month theme, "Love in Action," resonates deeply with Black Voters Matter (BVM). Our mission is to empower marginalized Black communities, and we believe effective voting is a cornerstone of self-determination. Our approach goes beyond financial support; it's about advocacy, movement-building, and fostering community bonds. In 2022, we allocated nearly $10 million to 684 partners across 233 counties. This growth underscores the power of trust-based philanthropy, which strengthens grassroots organizations and amplifies racial justice work. Trust-based philanthropy relies on intermediaries like BVM to bridge the gap between donors and community groups. By removing barriers and streamlining reporting, we enable swift resource allocation to those who need it most. Racial justice is a continual journey, not a passing trend. As the landscape evolves, our commitment remains firm. Through trust, compassion, and collective action, we can build a more just and inclusive society.
