Very happy to share that the results of the CONFIDENT-B trial have now been published in Nature Cancer! 👉🏻 https://rdcu.be/dL3Az (open access) In summary, implementation of AI-assistance for the detection of breast cancer metastases in sentinel lymph nodes: 1️⃣ Is safe (by CONFIDENT design), patients are not at risk of an inferior diagnosis. 2️⃣ Significantly reduces immunohistochemistry use and subsequent costs. 3️⃣ Saves pathologists time and makes their work more enjoyable. At the pathology department of UMC Utrecht we now use the Metastasis Detection App by Visiopharm in daily clinical practice.   Why is this prospective clinical study (design) important? 🔹 Many studies on ‘promising’ AI-approaches are published, yet very few make it into clinical practice (or even prospective clinical studies for that matter). 🔹 Retrospective series do not reflect clinical decision making, as patient management does not depend on the assessments made in retrospect. We need prospective studies to evaluate the added value of AI in daily pathology practice. Many thanks to all co-authors, Rachel Flach, Natalie ter Hoeve, Celien Vreuls, Roel Goldschmeding, Jan-Erik Freund, Paul Pham, Tri Nguyen, Elsken Van Der Wall, Geert Frederix, Nikolas Stathonikos and of course Paul Van Diest! And lastly, thanks to the Stichting Hanarth Fonds for funding this trial.
