Population health cohort studies are the most extensive, reliable source of prospective and longitudinal health data, linking individuals to disease and health trajectories. Harvesting knowledge from these enormous investments will save researchers as much as 70% of data collection and recruitment costs and many years of data collection time. Busselton Health Study is grateful to be one of the grant recipients of the WA Cohort Study-Operational Support Program. Congratulations to the other six cohort studies who also received support from this program. The WA Cohort Study-Operational Support Program aims to provide operational funding necessary for cohort studies to continue to contribute to the delivery of clinical outcomes, changes to health policy and translational health outcomes. The program provides grants based on an assessment of research excellence which includes eligible research grant income, number of PhD students supported, and the number of new projects supported by the cohort study over the previous three years.

Honored to be elected to the National Academy of Medicine today as a physician-scientist committed to bringing basic science to medicine. This election recognizes the work of an extraordinary group of post-doctoral fellows, students and colleagues for almost 20 years. Monica Bertagnolli's Senate hearing yesterday is a critical current event to follow! The NIH's direction and leadership sets future scientific and technological innovations in motion. It is a determinant of the pool of ideas available to translational scientists and physicians to apply as real-world solutions. The article summarizes Dr. Bertagnolli's stated priorities as: "improving the diversity of clinical-trial participants, enhancing collaboration among the NIH’s 27 institutes and centres and restoring public trust in scientists and the agency" As a multidisciplinary scientist hoping to see a stronger feedback loop between basic science projects and community implementation of findings, these priorities resonate! "Adopting relatively simple recommendations will lead to more inclusive clinical trials that protect the scientific integrity of personalized medicine interventions. It will also increase equity in the delivery of health care." So writes PMC Board Member James Lillard this morning in an op-ed for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that highlights the significance of PMC recommendations, released last week, on how to improve diversity and inclusion in biomedical research. Dr. Lillard makes it clear: There are actions we can take today to strengthen the scientific foundation for personalized medicine, which depends on an inclusive biomedical research enterprise to better understand how medical interventions may work for patients from historically underrepresented communities.
