This paper places #Europe’s hydrogen ambition in the broader context of the evolving #geopolitics of the #transition to net zero. It highlights the growing #geoeconomic rivalry among the world’s leading economies, such as the European Union , the #UnitedStates, and #China. This process is marked by the #resurgence of state intervention in markets and industries as well as by the increasing attention paid by #governments to supply chain resilience and asymmetric #dependencies. Clean hydrogen has been part and parcel of these developments. The EU and many of its Member States view hydrogen as essential to their #climate goals, industrial #competitiveness, and #energy security. As a result, Europe has played an active role in promoting a European hydrogen economy and an international hydrogen market. The chapter frames EU hydrogen policy as the interplay of interests at EU and Member State level, which can be a source of both tensions and synergies. It also discusses how this is manifested in the EU’s external climate and energy policy and international #partnerships. #H2Europe is proud to announce the publication of its yearly #CleanHydrogenMonitor 2023. The report was launched today, Tuesday 21 November at the European Hydrogen Week, taking place in Brussels, Belgium.   The Monitor presents quantitative and qualitative indicators that track the state of play of the emergence of the #cleanhydrogen market in #Europe. The last 12 months saw #hydrogen retain its place at the highest level of the political agenda in the EU, with the adoption of #REDIII, the establishment of the #HydrogenBank and its prominence in the EU #industrialplan just to name a few. But while it is increasingly clear that hydrogen will be a cornerstone of the #EUGreenDeal and of the EU’s objective to become the first #climateneutral continent, there are still #challenges ahead. 2024 is the year of #Fitfor55 package implementation at national level with national governments expected to implement not only #regulatorytargets and policies, but also coordinate the #deployment of #infrastructure to ensure their industries’ access to hydrogen. 🌍 Towards a Sustainable Energy Future: Reflections on #Water, #Hydrogen, and #CleanFuels 🏭🏗️🚛🚆🚢✈️💧♻️ In the current context of global #EnergyTransition, it is essential to reflect on the #innovative and #sustainable solutions that can shape our future. The availability of #water, a vital but scarce resource in regions like the #MiddleEast, poses a unique challenge for #EnergyProduction. This situation urges us to seek alternatives that enhance resource #efficiency and #sustainability. #Hydrogen emerges as a promising candidate in this quest, but its potential can only be fully realized when it is produced sustainably (#CleanHydrogen). Here, #technologies based on #ThermoChemical pathways become critically important. These technologies have the power not only to generate hydrogen but also other clean or #SyntheticFuels, ensuring that they are #CarbonNeutral or even #CarbonNegative. This approach addresses not only the need for #CleanEnergy and accessibility but also considers the #unique #limitations and #opportunities of each #region. For example, in areas rich in #natural #resources but limited in #water, developing #CleanFuels through #thermochemical methods can be an optimal solution. In #coastal countries with abundant #water, #Electrolysis could serve as a viable route for production. The same approach applies in regions with abundant #Renewables. Beyond #Hydrogen, it is crucial to explore a variety of #SyntheticFuels that can adapt to different needs and contexts. These #fuels can not only energize areas without access to #ElectricalTransmission networks but also power diffuse energy sources such as use in #HeavyTransport, #MaritimeTransport and #Aviation. Furthermore, these same technologies have the potential to revolutionize the #Recycling and #Recovery of #CriticalMetals, especially from spent #Lithium-ion batteries (#LIB) and #RenewableEnergy components. This supports not only environmental #sustainability but also contributes to the #CircularEconomy, maximizing the value and lifespan of #RawMaterials. On this path towards a #cleaner and #sustainable energy future, it is essential that we consider all available options and work together to develop solutions that are both #innovative and respectful of the #environment and #resource limitations. I hope these reflections inspire constructive dialogue and foster closer #collaboration among all #stakeholders involved in the #Mining and #Energy industry.
