Maple Leafs are clever to begin Fraser Minten within the NHL https://ift.tt/B0emOxD 2023-10-10 01:00:39 The NHL’s preseason means completely nothing to most individuals, however don’t inform that to Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Fraser Minten. After being what many thought of a protracted shot to make the Leafs this season, Minten has achieved nothing however impress since day one in every of camp and now he’s managed to make the opening evening lineup. Based on the observe strains on Oct.9, right here’s how the opening evening lineup ought to form up: A possible preview of the Leafs opening evening lineup at observe in the present day: Bertuzzi — Matthews — Marner Domi — Tavares — Nylander Knies — Minten — Järnkrok Gregor — Kämpf — Reaves Rielly — Brodie McCabe — Klingberg Giordano — Liljegren — Jonas Siegel (@jonassiegel) October 9, 2023 Kudos to go coach Sheldon Keefe and normal supervisor Brad Treliving for giving the child an opportunity. Too many occasions all through all the main sports activities do you see organizations maintain again younger expertise simply due to age. When sure gamers are mature past their years, it’s essential to interrupt limitations and the ‘previous approach of doing issues’ and be open-minded sufficient to present a participant a shot. Minten’s received his shot, now it’s time to get to work. The former second-round decide has all of the instruments. He’s 6-foot-2, sturdy on the puck and within the faceoff dot, and he’s extraordinarily accountable on the defensive facet of the puck and doesn’t take many dangers. This is large to win the belief of the group, and extra particularly the teaching employees. Limit the dangers and well timed errors and issues may go very nicely for Minten in his rookie yr. Offensively, the sport is additional alongside than many individuals suppose. Minten’s by no means been one to gentle up a rating sheet, nonetheless with Matthew Knies and 20-goal scorer Calle Jarnkrok on his line, the trio will chip in offensively greater than folks suppose. Yes, it’s going to be defence first as the highest two strains ought to be carrying the load up entrance, however don’t assume the third line goes to be restricted to a shut-down line. There’s some offense in there, and Knies and Jarnkrok are going to profit an incredible quantity from having such a wise centre down the center of the road. Toronto can play Minten for just a few weeks earlier than burning a yr on his entry-level deal so the primary 9 video games or so are going to be crucial. Time will inform, but when he proves that he belongs, he may stick across the complete season and begin his NHL profession off as a teen. He doesn’t flip 20 till subsequent July. After years the place the likes of Nick Robertson or Pontus Holmberg have been despatched down to begin the season, it’s a refreshing sight to see the Maple Leafs taking part in a few rookies collectively and in a giant spot. Notes from the Atlantic: Tkachuk, Ekman-Larsson, McMann - https://lnkd.in/dC93JY32 As the regular season comes to a close, many players on teams not in the playoffs are making decisions about whether or not they will suit up for their country at this year's IIHF World Championship. One of those players, Brady Tkachuk of the Ottawa Senators, is leaning toward playing for Team USA according to multiple reports (Link). Since officially joining the Senators organization in the 2018-19 NHL season, Tkachuk has not suited up for international play. However, he captained Team USA at the 2018 World Junior Championships, scoring three goals and nine points in seven games, helping lead his team to the bronze medal. If Tkachuk joins Team USA for this year's tournament showcase, he will try to bring the team closer to tournament relevance. The United States has not received a gold medal in the tournament since 1960, which is also the last time they received a medal higher than bronze. Other Atlantic notes: In the team's overtime win against the Buffalo Sabers tonight, the Florida Panthers received some negative news on their blue line. At the beginning of the second half, the team Announced that defender Oliver Ekman-Larsson he would not return to the game due to an upper body injury after just 3:04 minutes of ice time. Given that the Panthers only have one game left in the regular season, it's more than likely that the organization will sideline Ekman-Larsson in that game to get him fully rested for the playoffs. Similarly to Ekman-Larsson, the Toronto Maple Leafs have lost Bobby McMann for the remainder of their game tonight against the Detroit Red Wings (Link). Suffering a lower-body injury, McMann fell awkwardly in Toronto's defensive zone and cautiously returned to the Maple Leafs bench. Regardless of the severity, Toronto is also likely to keep McMann out of the final two games of the regular season so that he is at full strength for the postseason. The Evolution of Competition in the NHL Playoffs - https://lnkd.in/d-EQit5R When the puck drops for the opening faceoff, most players know their assignments for the night. For Phillip Danault on opening night of last year's NHL playoffs, that task was the toughest in hockey: Connor McDavid. At five-on-five, Danault played 18:07 in Game 1 and spent all but three minutes against McDavid. That's 83 percent of Danault's minutes, a trend that continued throughout the series. The Los Angeles Kings may have lost the series, but Danault deserves a lot of credit for how he handled his task. In the 58 minutes the duo faced each other, the Edmonton Oilers were held to just one goal. That's a big victory for Danault, made even bigger by the degree of difficulty. No player had a tougher task in last year's playoffs than Danault, whose competition had an average offensive rating of 9.6. Playing almost exclusively against McDavid will certainly have that effect. Playing tough minutes is nothing new for Danault, who played some of the toughest minutes last season and does so consistently every year. But there's a big difference between what that means in the playoffs and the regular season. Danault's quality of competition there? An average offensive rating of 2.8. That's 6.8 fewer goals than he faced in his first-round battle against McDavid's Oilers. That difference is a big reason why teams focus so much on a player's ability to handle tough minutes when building their roster. It's not just a big difference for Danault because he had to face McDavid, it's a difference that applies across the board. In the playoffs, each matchup is more difficult. That should be an obvious statement given that the competitive field narrows down to the top 16 teams in the league, but it doesn't often apply when you think about playoff usage and how tough minutes become. Throughout an 82-game regular season, every team plays every team, and that's part of what causes the dilution in the difference between the easiest and most difficult minutes. Getting the matchup assignment against Edmonton is much different than getting the matchup assignment against San Jose. Here's what that means in practice from a defensive perspective. The projected league average offensive rating among starters (anyone with 41 games) is 1.2. If you remove teams from the league that are unlikely to be in the playoffs, the number almost doubles to 2.0. If you plot each player side by side, from best to worst, it will become clear that there is a considerable discrepancy between an average playoff team and a non-playoff team. That's especially true at the top end, where every playoff team has a big threat to play against. The average offensive rating for a top-50 playoff player is 14.1, nearly five goals higher than the average for non-playoff players at 9.7. The stakes are higher in the playoffs and each game ...
