We second Sara Asalya and Walid Hejazi, who argue that stronger investment is needed to ensure the successful integration of skilled immigrants in the Canadian labour force. Whether focusing on leadership training to women new to Canada, as they do, or providing accessible financing to those facing licensing, accreditation and reskilling challenges, like Windmill, the point remains -- the key is to better #EmpowerImmigrants. https://lnkd.in/e3TrzyV5

Elevating immigrant and newcomer perspectives, through collaboration and partnership! Surrey Local Immigration Partnership
The Surrey Local Immigration Partnership’s Employment Summit, held at the Civic Hotel on June 12, brought people together to explore the power of a diverse workforce for employers and the local economy in #SurreyBC. Unlocking Opportunities through Newcomer Talent was the theme, and the event helped employers and employment sector professionals better understand how to recruit, retain and integrate immigrants in the workplace. The summit included keynote speaker, Ruth Mojeed Ramirez, Chief Equity Officer of The Inclusion Project and curator of Employment Equity Co-Lab. A panel discussion was moderated by Patrick MacKenzie, CEO of the Immigrant Employment Council of BC and included panellists, Nerissa Allen, Co-founder and President of the Black Business Association of BC; Tom Conway, CEO of Small Business BC (SBBC); Ui Heang Hur, Employer Support and Relation Specialist, Société de développement économique de la Colombie-Britannique (SDECB); and Nick (Naeem) 🍁 Noorani, Founder of Immigrant Networks - Social Networking Platform. "The Employment Summit, hosted by the Surrey Local Immigration Partnership, beautifully reflected our collective aspiration towards building an equitable community. Through partnership and collaboration, we directed our efforts toward elevating the perspectives of immigrants and newcomers, and fostering employment environments that are both inclusive and welcoming. This approach not only positioned the conversation at the heart of our mission but also underscored our shared zeal and readiness for transformation," said Lenya Wilks, Director, Partnership and Stakeholder Engagement, Surrey LIP. The Surrey LIP’s Employment Summit was successful in discovering how businesses can tap into immigrant talent and foster diversity in the workplace.

For a third consecutive year, Sheridan College made Forbes' list of Canada's Best Employers for Diversity. We're happy that they are being open about some of the strategies they've used. In this article: https://bit.ly/3v8VB68 the head of their EDI discussed many things including advice for employers who want to implement EDI policies and procedures. Here are some takeaways: ➡️ Assess where you are and get started. ➡️ Listen to your stakeholders. ➡️ Be ready to handle the backlash. #Inclusivity #EDI #WorkplaceCulture #AVELConsulting

CREDIT: - The Canadian Press News: ...In the wake of the resignation of Canadian National Railway Co.'s Indigenous advisory council, experts say corporate Canada needs to do some soul-searching and decide if it is serious about reconciliation... ..."What we've experienced to date is check-box engagements," Shannin Metatawabin ICD.D said. "It's the minimum engagement with the Indigenous community — attending a dinner, making a corporate sponsorship to an Indigenous initiative or something. That is as much as corporate Canada has done to date, and that's really not an impact at all."... ...Experts also say corporate Canada needs to move beyond window dressing to real action. It's not enough to put Indigenous art in the lobby or change the name of a building, they say — economic reconciliation means providing ways for Indigenous people to be prosperous... ...Jason Bird said while appointing an Indigenous advisory council will backfire on companies that aren't genuinely willing to implement the advice they receive, it's a good idea for any company that knows it has work to do on reconciliation and is willing to learn. #indigenbiz #indigenous #business #indigenousbusiness #indigenousadvisory #CNRail #reconciliation https://lnkd.in/gXpEQ8dF

Reconciliation goes far beyond making land acknowledgments, attending an Indigenous conference or sponsoring an Indigenous event! It involves a genuine desire to face the truth about Canadian history and break down the systematic barriers that exist to control and suppress our people. Reconciliation involves a willingness to accept the fact that genocide was committed (and continues to be) on our people through violence, violation of treaties and systematic repression that was purposely designed to eliminate our existence. This has resulted in entire generations who lost their culture, language, customs, sacred knowledge and connection to family and themselves which has caused high rates of poverty, incarceration, suicide, and so many other traumas amongst our people. Economic reconciliation will only happen when corporate companies, board of directors and all levels of government are willing to: - break down the systematic barriers that keep our people and communities suppressed and poor, - give ownership to our people in capital projects allowing for long-term economic growth and prosperity, - allow for representation in governance so we can have a say in the strategic decision making process, - help our people become wealthy, (instead of the other way around). We have to move beyond accepting crumbs from the table and be willing to flip the entire table over so we can restart from scratch, together, in a meaningful, mutually beneficial manner if we are to co-exist together. It is time to go beyond one-time gestures, token advisory committees and short-term influxes of cash and jobs if corporate Canada wants to make reconciliation a reality. #indigenbiz #indigenous #business #indigenousbusiness #indigenousadvisory #CNRail #reconciliation https://lnkd.in/gB9qiBDe

Canada has opened the second stage of the Recognized Employer Pilot Program, which expands the list of eligible occupations by adding over 80 job titles from various industries. The program, launched by Employment and Social Development Canada under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, aims to help employers address labor shortages by providing them with a pool of foreign talent. The eligible occupations have been identified by the Canadian government as being in demand and having insufficient domestic labor supply. The first stage of the program was launched in September 2023 and was limited to employers in the primary agriculture sector. This expansion of the program will benefit a wider range of industries and help employers find the talent they need.
