Public health and health advocacy are interconnected fields. Public health focuses on preventing and improving health at the population level, while health advocacy promotes the health needs and rights of individuals and communities. Health advocacy complements public health by raising awareness, shaping policies, and bridging the gap between public and public health initiatives. Together, these disciplines work to ensure a healthier and more equitable future for all. Fred N. Binka School of Public Health, UHAS Youth Combating NTDs

Community Health Worker Definition: "A community health worker is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the worker to serve as a liaison/link/intermediary between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery. A community health worker also builds individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy." -American Public Health Association Definition Now that's a mouthful and not how a CHW typically explains what they do, can we agree? :) In a shorter version what is a CHW to You? How do you explain to people your role? Drop it below! . . #communityhealthworker #chwinstructor #careergoals #healthcareworkers #publichealth

Advocacy Strategies for Enhancing Public Health by Dr. McKing Amedari Public health advocacy refers to educating, organizing, and mobilizing for systems change in population health. Advocacy plays a critical role in translating research into policy and practice and seeing the changes in public opinion. Effective advocacy in public health demands a sophisticated skill set. Practitioners must possess a deep understanding of social change theories, engage in critical analysis, wield strategic insight, and master the art of collaborative engagement with diverse stakeholders to address a wide spectrum of challenges. Dr. Amedari also highlights the importance of tools that enable the alteration of high-risk behaviors, underscores the significance of pre-advocacy groundwork, highlights the strategic elements of Public Health Advocacy Strategies, and underscores the pivotal role of public policy. It's essential to recognize that public policy forms the very foundation upon which the framework of public health operates, underscoring its significance as a driving force behind population health initiatives. #publichealth #advocacy #YPPH #HLLP #publicpolicy

What if legal services are integrated into healthcare settings? This recent study found that a medical-legal partnership results in policy advocacy, addressing issues from both the health and legal teams, with likely greater impact than if each group had acted alone. The researchers studied policy advocacy that emerged from the Health Justice Program, a collaboration between the St. Michael's Hospital Academic Family Health Team, Neighbourhood Legal Services, and other local community legal aid clinics. This study outlines how medical-legal partnerships can identify and address social determinants of health through policy advocacy.
