As a Reserve Officer Recruiter my goal is to Change Lives One Conversation At A Time. Managing change can be multilayered because it often involves our environment: people, places, cultural, etc. However, it can happen through conversations with individuals. Conversations are a powerful tool and provide valuable insight if we listen to what is being said as well as reading an individual’s body language. Is the person receptive to the information being provided and how are they responding to said information? Is the person continuing to engage in the conversation? Do you need to adjust your approach, tone, or body language? During a conversation, have you ever paused to ask the individual what is most important to them? Listen, Listen, Listen, Listen, This could lead to a more productive conversation. Why? Because you are now engaging that individual and can utilize the information to assess opportunities you may have available to offer them. Can you assist them in reaching their goals not your goals? Yesterday, I spoke with veterans at the Hampton Roads Veterans Employment Center (HRVEC) in Newport News about career opportunities with the Chesapeake Police Department. Here are three tips for veterans preparing to transition into a career in law enforcement: 1. Leverage Military Experience: Highlight the skills and experiences gained during military service that are relevant to law enforcement, such as leadership, teamwork, discipline, and the ability to perform under pressure. 2. Utilize Personal Life Experience: Reflect on and emphasize personal experiences outside of the military that have shaped your character and problem-solving abilities, such as community involvement, volunteer work, or any challenging situations you’ve navigated. 3. Network and Mentor: Connect with current law enforcement professionals and seek mentorship from those who have successfully made the transition from military to police work. If you’re leaving the forces or perhaps considering a new career, here is some friendly advice: 🔸Never, never limit yourself when it comes to your second career (or third, fourth…whatever!) 🔹You don’t have to utilise all your qualifications gained in service or previous employment - get some new ones! If it’s taught you something new, it’s not wasted. 🔸It’s not about what you did previously but rather about the qualities and value you brought. As long as that’s in you, you’ll be fine. 🔹Nothing is silly or off-limits. You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing. 🔸Do what makes you happy and when it’s right for you. It’s not a race. This is one of the things that I've been talking about, with recruiting #membership in The American Legion. The lessons that the United States Marine Corps and Marine Corps Recruiting can teach us are invaluable. I believe our focus is off target. I believe that we condescend too much, feeding the "Whats in it for me?" mindset. Those who think we aren't already targeting younger, minority, and women #veterans, aren't paying attention. One of the extraordinary examples of Legion history is that women and minorities could vote in Legion elections before they could vote in American elections. That attitude of a "veteran is a veteran is a veteran" is both naturally #inclusive and defining our community as a subsection of the population, deserving of attention. The perks are there, but but should be secondary in our pitch. Additionally it is critical that we make it easy to serve. Include the family. Erase political chatter. Mentor. Have opportunities to "do" things. I think we benefit if we get back to focusing on mission first. When recruiting for the Legion Family, let's talk about the opportunities to serve and improve the lives of those in the military/veteran community, as well as all living in the greater community. Never fear; there's levels to this service that can adapt to each member's bandwidth of fiscal and time resources. Some can impact by simply paying their dues to support. Some will do a bit more and participate in www.legion.org/action to help flex our lobbying power by contacting their elected officials, in a strategic and unified way. Some will participate in volunteer activities in the community. Others will step up and support programs that fall under our Four Pillars. Maybe they want help with Legion baseball, oratorical, Boys/Girls State, or any of the list of orphans that we have. Those who really want to dive deep in this will aspire to leadership. This is the potential power of Be The One. We have a mission of ending veteran suicide. Actionable steps towards that end are becoming increasingly availabe. www.legjon.org/betheone. Service is in the DNA of those who served honorably in a #military uniform. Does it not seem logical to appeal to that sense of service when we ask them to wear the Legion cover? I find that, on a personal note, I can be simultaneously very disarming and something of an anomaly that can indeed put people on guard. It’s on odd existence, but not necessarily a bad one - whether it be by virtue of dual citizenship, bisexuality, etc, call it the travails of duality. It’s odd, however, in that I think many Americans would describe it as a “mixed signals” sort of effect. To me, however, my persona is more about pulling off two seemingly impossible things at once. This might seem awfully personal for LinkedIn, but I’m posting it as a preface for what I aspire to be my mid and long term career goals - two things that might not seem possible to do in one life, but are in fact possible by virtue of holding two passports with a commitment to Duty and Integrity in both. As an active duty military spouse I know all too personally how building and advancing in a career can pose unique challenges. As a professional social worker, I've had to navigate through multiple state licensing boards and costly fees and have faced the worry of hiring hesitancy/discrimination, all while moving every 2-3 years... Let's just say these challenges make for less than a smooth ride. But, there is hope! Just finished an insightful course on finding your career calling, applicable not only to returning veterans but also to returning humanitarian aid workers. As someone who struggled to transition to the commercial world after years of humanitarian aid work, I realized the importance of preparing well for this big step.
