McDonald’s is removing self-service drink machines from all their U.S. restaurants. In this case it’s “No Drinks For You”. The company says the move is due to changing ‘customer preferences’ – people are opting for mobile orders and the drive-thru and dining rooms are sitting empty. But frankly, I call BS. We all know those pesky ‘soda machine bandits’ – the penny pinchers who ask for a water cup and help themselves to everything at the machine. My late father, brought up during the depression, who preached integrity, in his later years became a bandit himself. No napkin, ketchup, plastic fork, salt was safe from his sticky hands. My suspicion is this trend has gotten so out of hand with high inflation that the company’s just had enough. What then will be the unintended consequences - because we know there will be?
