The California Water Plan contains a massive wave of information, so DWR is summarizing the highlights for you in smaller “splashes”! 💦 Today, we’re tackling supporting and learning from Tribal water and resource management practices. While California Native American Tribes have a long history of sustainable water and resource management practices, Tribal communities face water management challenges related to water rights, infrastructure development, engagement, and Tribal direct funding. To address these challenges and learn from Tribal water management practices, we are going to strengthen partnerships with California Native American Tribes and ensure that Tribes are included in planning and water resources decision-making processes. This includes collaborating with Tribes to incorporate Indigenous knowledge into California water policy, planning, and projects, and further understanding Tribal water quality, ecosystems, and access to water, to support Tribal lifeways including subsistence and cultural practices. Check out our article on Mauricio Guardado of the United Water Conservation District: building drought resilience in Ventura County, California from our March issue. The United Water Conservation District manages, protects, conserves, and advances the water supply in a 375-square- mile service area in Southern California. Through careful monitoring and management, it sustains the Santa Clara River’s water resources, its tributaries, and its associated aquifers in an environmentally balanced manner. To build resilience in the face of California’s worsening drought-flood cycles, the district is aggressively pursuing both new sources of water supply and new ways to use its vast storage capacity. In this interview, United’s general manager, Mauricio Guardado, tells Municipal Water Leader about the district’s impressive projects, which span aquifer recharge, brackish water desalination, dam improvements, and more, and the successful partnerships and funding applications that have made it all possible. https://bit.ly/3VqjQYy #WaterConservation #DroughtResilience #VenturaCounty #UnitedWaterConservation #CaliforniaWater #WaterManagement #MauricioGuardado #WaterSecurity

I bring together diverse stakeholders to care for and recover the Great Lakes for future generations.
🚨Michiganders, we need your help. If you’re a regular reader of Michigan Trout, you know the work of the Water Use Advisory Council (WUAC) has significant implications for coldwater conservation. In 2022, the council made recommendations regarding needed improvements, deficiencies, and investments into Michigan’s Water Use & Assessment Program. We cannot let these critical recommendations go unfunded. Contact your elected officials today to urge them to provide necessary funding to implement the WUAC’s recommendations and help Michigan fulfill its obligation to protect Great Lakes’ water resources for current and future generations. 💧August is National Water Quality Month! 💧 The Land Trust for Tennessee understands just how important land is - but a major part of what makes our land here in Tennessee so valuable, diverse, and life-sustaining is the water that flows through it. The Land Trust is driven to continue protecting areas of high water quality to ensure a healthy future for generations to come. We did this water quality analysis, based on a combination of recent, on-the-ground sampling data and land-based factors, to give us a reading on the health of our watersheds. Further, it assists in the prioritization of land conservation projects that will have the greatest impact on nearby and downstream water quality. 💧In honor of National Water Quality Month, we want to highlight some of the ways we have contributed to protecting Utah's water quality. Our team has a long history of supporting water quality initiatives in Utah. For instance, in 2011, we assisted Weber County in managing Emergency Watershed Protection projects. We provided essential review services and acted as the County's agent in managing the program, including restoring multiple Weber River segments and connected structures. One key approach Utah uses to protect water quality is developing and implementing Watershed Protection Plans (WPPs). These comprehensive strategies are designed to maintain or improve water quality within a watershed, addressing specific water quality issues to provide long-term sustainability. The California Water Plan contains a massive wave of information, so DWR is summarizing the highlights for you in smaller “splashes”! 💦Today, we’re tackling understanding and addressing equity in the management of California’s water resources. Many Californians experience social, economic, and health disadvantages based on race, gender, age, income level, or any combination of those. When water management decisions don’t account for this reality, it can severely hurt a community. Inequities show up in accessing water, water quality, preparing for climate change impacts like flooding or drought, and being able to afford water. The California Water Plan encourages continued outreach and engagement with frontline communities, Tribes, and non-governmental organizations to inform future Water Plan updates and invest in the next generation of community water leaders and operators. Happy World Water Day! 💧 🏞️ Today is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of conserving water resources and think about how we can strive for more sustainable water management practices and equitable access to clean water. In California, the state’s water-related challenges are always top-of-mind—from water conservation, to supplementing groundwater recharge, to protecting water sources from natural disasters. In Morgan Hill, California, we’re assisting Valley Water to help rehabilitate Anderson Dam, the largest surface reservoir in Santa Clara County. Due to seismic risk, this vital reservoir, which supplies 90,000 acre-feet of rainfall runoff and imported water, can only accommodate three percent of drinking water supplies. ESA, working with COWI construction team, is overseeing the project as environmental lead; steering environmental compliance, water quality monitoring, and permitting, to return the reservoir to its original storage capacity. It’s one part of how we’re helping to improve the reliability of our water resources.
