'Caring for those who care for others' Tailored coaching and support for Managers of Regulated Services.. Supporting their work and wellbeing integration which leads to retaining them in the role they love.
How can it be expected that care homes are to be safe, caring, responsive, effective and well-led when the manager is pushed to breaking point? I know that there are lots of really good care homes and also some not so good but if the person in charge doesn't know if its Tesco or Tuesday how are they supposed to deliver on the outcomes? The need to support care home managers and to fully understand what the role ACTUALLY requires is crucial. (not forgetting the legal responsibility that goes with it). What can be done? What can YOU do? If our regulators look at how they care for the staff why are we not being asked how are we looking after the manager? Surely if we care and support our managers as PEOPLE this would improve the outcomes, reduce recruitment, improve KPI's, etc More importantly provide a stable, happy and secure home for those living there. #carehomes #managementsupport #careforthosewhocareforothers #careproviders

An interesting article that analyses the advertised job descriptions of aged care managers: https://lnkd.in/d6VygQSG This article highlights the competing demands placed on management roles within residential aged care. They are expected to be clinicians, so they can jump on the floor; but also responsible for funding and finance; and likely the new quality standards and reforms. And as the article highlights, often good clinicians are promoted into aged care management roles. But good clinical skills do not equate to being a great leader. Candidates with good management skills might have minimal or no experience with aged care funding. Are we looking for the right skills for management roles and are we asking too much of one person? Some of the recommendations within the article are not realistic with the current staff shortages and financial landscape of residential aged care. Perhaps it can help us think a little differently when it comes to recruitment and promotion. #agedcare #workforce #innovation

The staffing crisis in community based care settings is not showing any signs of abatement. Provider organizations are struggling to recruit and retain staff. And because low staffing creates unsafe conditions for both staff and residents, state governments are now amping up their oversight of new regulations meant to ensure safe staffing levels. (The state of Oregon through an Acuity Based Staffing methodology as well as annual self-reported quality metrics.) That there's more regulation around staffing in Oregon and throughout the country should be a wakeup call to the industry. There are deep underlying problems that have to be addressed ASAP. The most obvious is: what's it like for the workers in long term care communities? What is the culture they encounter on Day 1? Are they getting paid enough? Do they feel safe? I would like to see leaders in this industry -- especially owners -- step into the shoes of the care professionals, the administrators, the dining and transportation and maintenance staff and see what it's like for them. The solution to the staffing crisis might be right under our nose. Are we caring for those who care for everyone else? Are care professionals walking into communities that have cultures that support high quality care? #staffingcrisis #longtermcare #cultureofhighqualitycare #communitybasedcare #directcareworker #culturechange #LiveWellMethod #qualityimprovement

How do you solve Wisconsin's health care workforce shortage? You start by listening to people working hard to address the shortage. That's what Governor Tony Evers did today at Central Wisconsin Center in Madison. He heard from staff from the Department of Workforce Development and the Department of Health Services about the work both agencies are doing to train the next generation of health care workers, connect them with employers, and retain them in the field. At Central Wisconsin Center, this means offering paid training for people to learn the skills necessary to earn a certified nursing assistant credential. It means hosting walk-in hiring events to remove barriers to applying and interviewing for open positions. A walk-in hiring event was happening during the governor's visit. It means offering hiring bonuses. It means offering a bonus to staff who refer new hires. I could go on and on. The governor heard about a lot of successes. Still, many challenges exist and the Governor's Task Force on the Healthcare Workforce is charged with identifying solutions to those challenges. You'll start hearing more about the task force's work in the coming weeks. The best part about today's visit: the governor had an opportunity to hear from Central Wisconsin Center staff about why they love their jobs and what attracted them to work for Central Wisconsin Center. And the governor shared how early in his working life he worked as an orderly (what today we call a certified nursing assistant). He understands the challenges faced by health care employers in recruiting and retaining staff. Thank you to the Department of Workforce Development for this opportunity to draw attention to the rewarding careers at one of the facilities managed by the Department of Health Services. Inaugural Kara J. Trott Professor in Law at the Moritz College of Law; Co-Founder and a faculty affiliate of The Institute for Healing Justice & Equity
Here is an informative policy brief that discusses the problems with this approach in Ohio from a former Ohio department of health employee: https://lnkd.in/du5Dwpb6
In championing public health goals like reducing gun violence and expanding health clinics in schools, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is less focused on using exact public health terminology and more concerned with appealing to constituents' values. "It's hard to sell stuff on the basis of public health," DeWine said. "Everyone wants to see kids do better. … It's easier when you couch it in those terms instead of talking about building up what some people will look at as some bureaucracy that interferes in my life." https://lnkd.in/ejUn99sp #advocacy #communications #HealthComm #HealthComms #policy #PublicHealth

Public Health Thought Partner | CEO @ The Public Health Millennial | Health Equity Thought Partner | Health Improvement Program Officer | Public Speaker | Consultant
Can we have a larger conversation around this (pretty please)? Yes: I like this, let's move public health by any means necessary. No: I don't like this, continuing to push 'public health' out of public health feels concerning. Begs the question(s): - How effective is Governor DeWine's approach of avoiding direct mention of public health while promoting initiatives that inherently contribute to public health? - What challenges does Governor DeWine face in advocating for public health initiatives within a traditionally conservative political landscape? - How do traditional conservative values align with the promotion of public health initiatives such as safe sleep for infants, early education, mental health care, etc.? - What is the public reception to Governor DeWine's approach of framing public health initiatives within the context of traditional conservative values? - What are the potential long-term impacts of Governor DeWine's approach on public health outcomes in Ohio? Open to thoughts, comments, conversation. P.S. the comments on the original article are a bit funny lol (yikes).

When a domestic violence survivor shows up at the ER, a comprehensive care plan to support is initiated (medical, social work, etc). Sadly, we seem to be accepting violence directed at staff. Nurses who are being abused at work are not only putting up with it, in many instances, they have been conditioned to accept that it’s normal. Despite the benefit to being able to use humour to move through pain, to compartmentalize in order to keep moving, we have to stop “laughing off” threats of abuse and normalizing physical abuse such as objects being thrown at staff. If we are going to make a culture shift in healthcare, then perhaps we need a comprehensive HR plan to educate managers on how to comprehensively support their nurses and other healthcare workers, including management training on identifying potential and actual staff abuse, and learning strategies to be able to offer support. The sooner we acknowledge what needs to radically change, the quicker we can begin to move forward. #TimeForRadicalChange
