Next week marks six months for me as 826NYC's Executive Director, and one of the recurring cautions development folks shared with me when I started was about the "summer slump." If you're not familiar with non-profit fundraising, it tends to run in seasons. Winter is end-of-year giving season. Spring and fall are events seasons. And summer—at least for fundraising—is the dreaded season. But it doesn't have to be. As an educator, I know just how important summer is for our students and our work. While fundraising may fall quiet, our programs do not pause. They do not slump. In fact, they soar. This summer, 826NYC's elementary school camp provides crucial opportunities for young people to learn, create, build social emotional skills, get outside, play, and make connections with one another. 826NYC also runs a robust internship opportunity for high school students to mentor younger students, create unique writing projects, engage in daily professional development, and build their resumes. Learn more about what our interns are up to here: https://lnkd.in/gJHqgWCh And if you're able to help us beat the "summer slump" by making our fundraising match the incredible work being done each day, contribute to the 826NYC summer appeal campaign here: https://give.826nyc.org/

Once again this year, the BLX Internship Program has a major problem on its hands: Too many talented, diverse interns and not enough firms to take them on. The program was founded in late 2020 by a group of four advisors who wanted to see the industry more accurately reflect the nation it serves. Known as BLX for short, the organization's goal is to provide an opportunity for underrepresented financial planners to secure internships at independent financial planning firms. "Unfortunately, we won't be able to place every applicant because we just don't have that many firms," co-founder Luis Rosa said. "The way it's looking with the number of applications, even if half are qualified applicants, we're still only able to place about a fraction of the qualified applicants." Read: Why the BLX Internship's supply and demand problem is one worth celebrating Via Financial Planning writer Justin Mack in a year-end round up of stories on DEI Link to the full article is in the comments below

6 useful personal behaviors I’ve instilled during my Woodson Equity internship thus far. 1. Arrive before everyone else; using that quiet time to get settled and focused. Being ready to go as my colleagues arrive sets a productive tone for my day. 2. Breaking my day into hour-long segments. Tracking my activities this way helps me maximize tasks and maintain productivity throughout the day. 3. Use Excel to log my tasks and progress, ensuring everything is organized and easy to follow. Regularly give situational reports my current status on taskers. The work I input into software is almost anonymous, helping my team stay aligned on ongoing projects and responsibilities. 4. Further my connections both in and outside the office. For instance, during my summer I was selected for jury duty in the Northern District Court of Illinois, I met amazing individuals, some whose paths have since crossed with mine during my daily commute. Our mutual commonality in being veterans and working in finance truly demonstrates the power of maintaining connections in unexpected places. 5. Take detailed notes during meetings, tracking key conversations, and sharing those thoughts with my leadership. Asking questions will uncover valuable insights and develop a deeper internship experience. 6. When communicating electronically, always aim for clarity, conciseness, and professionalism. Avoid poor habits like using overly casual language, or unclear phrasing. Review emails and messages to ensure they reflect my best self and convey my thoughts effectively. I’m glad to be apart of this team of skilled individuals while still unraveling so much to learn. #TheWoodsonWay #PrivateEquity #InsideAnInternship
