Cannabis stocks have had a rip-roaring year so far. My Cabot Cannabis Investor portfolio is up 33.4%. That’s more than eight times the 3.8% gain for the S&P 500. The broader cannabis sector has done well too, but not quite as well as my Cabot Cannabis Investor portfolio of the twelve best names in the space. The New Cannabis Ventures Global Cannabis Stock Index and the ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF (MJ) are up 14%. I’m up more than twice as much. Subversive Capital has introduced a new cannabis ETF, capitalizing on the potential rescheduling coming soon by the US government and following a boost to weed stocks after the HHS recommendation that everybody was talking about last week. 🍃 The ETF trades as LGLZ on the Cboe BZX Exchange and primarily invests in companies actively engaged in the global canna sector. Top holdings include Verano, Curaleaf, Trulieve, and Cresco Labs, among a few others. So is rescheduling actually going to happen? Right now, the DEA is reviewing the HHS recommendation, and optimistic indicators suggest that the DEA may actually adopt the proposed change. For now, it's a waiting game. A lot of MSO’s and brands came out the gates pushing cannabis products as a CPG. I get why they would do that but that’s not really what works in cannabis. Different strains reach different levels of popularity at different times. Growing a 1000lbs of mid LCG isn’t how you run a profitable cannabis business. The real influence in cannabis is with the craft side of the business. The pheno hunting, the dialing in of strains, and the understanding of terpenes. Cannabis moves in waves and if you aren’t tapped into the industry or your market you’ll be selling the wrong strains at the wrong time. Seeing $1B in shorts only proves how many people are betting that the guys in charge of these big brands and MSOs don’t know what the hell they are doing.
What does shorting a stock mean? It's kinda like betting the No Pass Line at the craps table. Everyone else is betting on the shooter to win but betting on the No Pass Line means you are betting on the shooter to lose. Example: If a trader takes a short position on a stock that was $25 and felt confident that the stock was going to drop down to $15 they would buy/short the shares at $15. If the trader is right and the stock hits $15 the trader banks the $10 difference for every share they brought. Most stock sectors experience some short action, but when the numbers jump it’s worth keeping an eye on. In the last few weeks, those short positions in cannabis have jumped dramatically to over $1 billion. According to new Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) data, the total short positions in cannabis stocks have increased as such: $515,681,726 – Jan 30, 2024 $581,570,514 – Feb 15, 2024 $757,630,223 – Mar 1, 2024 FINRA also released top short positions in cannabis: $232,378,500 – IIPR (Innovative Industrial Properties) $203,292,300 – TLRY (Tilray Brands) $183,064,097 – MSOS (AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF) $24,112,350 – CURLF (Curaleaf Holdings Inc) $15,134,000 – CGC (Canopy Growth Corp) The Canadian version of FINRA is the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) and it published the massive increase in short positions on Canadian exchanges: $36,844,949 – WEED.TO (Canopy Growth Corp) up 277% $19,858,409 – CRON.TO (Cronos Group Inc) $17,704,077 – TLRY.TO (Tilray Brands) $12,679,035 – ACB.TO (Aurora Cannabis Inc) up 112% $9,137,026 – OGI.TO (OrganiGram Holdings Inc) up 316%

#Cannabisstocks have finished 2023 in a worse position than they started the year despite promising developments around key issues for North American #multistateoperators (MSOs) and a broader market rally toward the year-end. The AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (MSOS), an actively managed fund dedicated to U.S.-listed cannabis companies, is down 2.4% this year, trading hands at US$6.93 shortly after the market opened on Wednesday, December 27. Shares of the Advisorshares Pure Cannabis ETF (YOLO), which has exposure to global cannabis stocks, have fallen 14% over the same period.
