My Dad was in the #import business when I was growing up. He worked from home (Dad was always ahead of his time) and I clearly remember he had a #telex machine in his #homeoffice. There are probably people reading this who don't even know what a telex machine is. But at least twice a day Dad would "check the telex" for communications from the companies he worked with in #Europe and #SouthAmerica. When Dad sent a telex he would write it first on a yellow legal pad abbreviating each word as much as possible. You see the telex service charged by the letter and the amount of time it took to send the telex so the shorter the message the less it cost. Then came the #early80s and Dad bought an #IBMPC with two #floppydiskdrives. The telex company took back their machine and replaced it with software on a disk. Dad and I installed the software and hooked up a #56kbaudmodem (I can't imagine how many people on here have ZERO idea what I'm talking about). Now sending a telex became cheaper and faster. Then came a chorus of #angels announcing the arrival of - wait for it - a $1,200 #faxmachine ignominiously left on the front stoop by the #UPSdriver. No more telex, no more abbreviated words, just write whatever you want to write and fax it. Then came more #software programs that you installed on your #PC, then #laptop. But the plummeting cost of #bandwidth and #processingpower made the explosion of the #internet possible so why install software when you can access it online? Today of course it's #tablets and #smartphones. So what's the point of the walk through history? If you're old enough to have witnessed this evolution something you never heard was a #philosophical or #moral debate about the uses of the #technologies. They were #tools used for a wide array of #business applications and #social interaction. That's what almost certainly makes this #AgeofAI a seminal moment. Should we pour billions of dollars and millions of man-hours into a technology we don't understand? Too late we're already doing it. Has this been rushed to market without proper debate? Moot point, it's already here. What should the safeguards be? Are they possible? Can #profit driven companies be trusted to #commercialize the technology responsibly? How do #lawmakers #legislate a technology they probably don't fully understand? Does anyone? You might think all these #AIdebates don't apply to you but they do. What happened at #OpenAI the past two weeks may have been haphazard and poorly thought through, but it's further proof the people calling for the #responsible use of this technology can screw up too. Would love to hear your thoughts. #TheAIconversation

Deepfakes have been around for years, but voice cloning software previously produced robotic, unrealistic voices. With today’s stronger computing power and more refined software, deepfake audio is more convincing. As is the case with many technological advances, criminals are early adopters and taking advantage of the nefarious opportunities provided. Learn more in our latest article! https://lnkd.in/e2rtBvde

Too much technology led to too much policing. Nobody wants this at all: - Get listened by phone. - Get snapped by camera. - Get monitored by algorithms. - Get replaced by artificial intelligence. Where are we headed? Is freedom of speech a myth? May be there is no freedom at all.

Absolutely fascinating and mind-boggling, but also quite obvious if you consider the fact that models like GPT-3 needs atleast 500Gb of VRAM. GPT3 isn't even the largest ones in existence rn. The infrastructure technology that makes these AI technology feasible is definitely not simple! https://lnkd.in/gYQbQ8Xm
