The learning rate plays a critical role in the performance of Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) in various optimization tasks, including controlling a robot arm. It determines the size of steps that the algorithm takes when adjusting the parameters (in this case, the angles θᵢ) which is essential for efficient and stable learning when minimizing the distance to a target. Imagine a rat searching for food in a maze. If the rat takes tiny steps (low learning rate), it will move very slowly through the maze, and it might take a long time to find the food. On the other hand, if the rat takes huge leaps (high learning rate), it may jump right past the food or get lost in the maze because it's moving too quickly. So, selecting the right learning rate for the rat is like finding a balance between small steps and big leaps. It helps the rat efficiently navigate the maze and locate the food without wasting time or missing it altogether.
