It was a pleasure to be part of the Climate Group close-door roundtable on ‘’Climate Foodprint - exploring food decarbonisation potential through policy and procurement’’ alongside representatives of different subnational governments and food experts at COP28. Really interesting discussion and exchange of information, practices, challenges and solutions. With an estimated USD 13 trillion globally spend annually, public procurement is a powerful lever for change. Governments can leverage public spend to deliver positive economic, environmental and social outcomes. UN SDG 12.7 recognises sustainable public procurement as a demand driver for the circular economy and net zero. At WRAP we are working with governments around the world to shape policy decisions that can be developed into actions that prevent waste and reduce GHG emissions. How do we take a balanced approach to airfreighted fresh produce that protects vital market access for developing world producers? With COP28 now underway, it's important we take bigger and bolder steps towards achieving Net Zero emissions. But at the same time, we must also consider the social and economic impacts and the unintended consequences of the choices we make. Airfreight helps to support the livelihoods of millions of people in developing countries, providing a vital way out of poverty. Climate Justice calls on us not only to consider the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities, but also the impacts of the actions we take in our effort to reduce emissions. Does the environmental benefit of reducing airfreighted fresh produce from developing countries outweigh the human cost? And what can we do to ensure there is a low-carbon future for these crucial trade links? There are no easy answers to these questions. But they cannot be ignored. 🌎 Our COP28 UAE verdict! 🌎 COP28 didn’t achieve everything that was hoped, but we still view it as a success. By affirming the need of transitioning away from fossil fuels, it sets very clearly the direction of travel and underscores the importance of international dialogue to address the climate crisis. This year’s meeting saw an increased focus on food systems (the source of almost 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions), recognizing their potential to deliver effective and innovative solutions in climate mitigation and adaptation. One positive step in this area is the launch of the Dairy Methane Action Alliance by a group of six leading dairy companies. Their commitment to reporting their methane emissions and adopting methane reduction plans by the end of 2024 is an outstanding example of what food system actors can do for the climate. We’re eager to support Alliance members with our Bovaer® feed additive, which cuts the enteric methane emissions of dairy cows by an average of 30%. Though we didn't attend in person, we’re one of 15 signatories of the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development Business Statement of Action, which complements government measures to accelerate action on sustainable food systems. Going forward, the private sector has to keep inspiring action from every stakeholder group on this vital issue – and we’re proud to be at the forefront of these efforts. I am not expecting food systems to be the main event at COP. We should keep the pedal on the energy transition which affects all other pathways, including food, as the Global Alliance for the Future of Food report describes. However, I do hope COP28 can highlight the opportunities that de-carbon(eq)izing our food systems could bring for our planet, for nature, for farmers and for consumers. Or as Oliver Camp eloquently puts it, food is a ´BOGOF´ - a buy one get one (many) free - solution. We don´t need major technological transitions or new sources of financial investment - the transition will pay for itself. We just need a bit of political will to put food systems on the climate agenda and then A LOT of coordinated action to deliver it. This is my hope for COP. Immensely grateful for all those tirelessly working to put food on the agenda, especially colleagues Edward, Clement, Katie and our fearless leader Morgan. #Cop28: Positive Aspects Amidst Fossil Fuel Compromise The agreement envisions a global scenario where the continuous rise in carbon emissions reaches its peak by 2025 “in line with different national circumstances”. This loophole gives room for China and indebted developing countries facing challenges in emission reduction, to delay reaching their respective peaks. Despite falling short on the commitment to phase out fossil fuels, the agreement does offer positive aspects. For instance, it acknowledges a positive link between having sufficient fiscal space, and climate action, emphasizing the need to scale up grant-based, highly concessional finance, and non-debt instruments to support developing countries in transitioning away from fossil fuels and advance on climate-resilient economic development. Promising developments for the food and agriculture industry, as the agreement calls on stockholders to strengthen adaptation efforts by supporting climate-resilient food and agricultural production, sustainable and regenerative production and equitable access to adequate food and nutrition for all. It also encourages the implementation of integrated, multi-sectoral solutions, such as land-use management, sustainable agriculture, resilient food systems, nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based approaches, while advocating for the protection, conservation, and restoration of nature and ecosystems. Pierce Gibson T'24, who attended COP28 as a Dartmouth-Tuck delegate, says the conference served as a reminder that our world is interconnected in a few important ways: 🏥 "Firstly, COP28 hosted the first ever ‘Health Day’ in the history of the conference. Though we tend to consider climate and health as two distinct issues, they are inextricably linked. While their contortion is daunting, addressing them holistically poses opportunities to generate meaningful co-benefits." 🤝 "Secondly, though the UNFCCC is an intergovernmental organization, COP28 saw a stark increase in interest from the private sector. I hope that public-private collaboration is a trend that continues. COP28 provided a market signal for the transition away from fossil fuels; how quickly and to what extent we can achieve that will depend on our willingness to collaborate across governments, nonprofits, and the private sector to realize change."
