When I worked in games, we sometimes referred to the core gameplay as the player’s “verbs”. The verbs describe what the player mainly does in the game. 🔨Build. 💰Gather. 🔫Shoot. 🧠Solve. 🚌Drive. 🦗Jump. The verbs are fundamental in setting a game’s particular flavor; they also describe the skill a player will develop over time. Similarly, if you want to optimize your learning outcomes through gamification, it’s essential to pay attention to the learner’s verbs. In gamified training, these become translated into learning activities (emphasis on “active”). And most of the time when a gamified program isn’t as effective as it should be, the reason is that not enough attention was paid to designing the right activities. This step is often skipped in favor of simply adding incentives to the course. Incentives aren’t bad per se, but they do have to work a lot harder to motivate learners if the activities themselves don’t feel engaging or relevant. ____________________________ Want to design targeted gamified activities that actually drive results? Over the next few years, we will see this word, ‘gamification’ coming up in conversations a lot more. The idea of gamification is making the boring and mundane fun by adding game mechanics such as competition, collectability, exploration and reward. As a result of game culture becoming a cultural norm, we are now seeing businesses integrating this into their operational systems. Whether that’s to incentivise a worker to work harder or a customer to spend more with your brand. Ultimately, this creates a better relationship between an individual and a brand. This feels to me like it’s really about having learning objectives that are testable in the medium of instruction. That’s the only way the learners can reliably get feedback on their understanding as they learn. As Miranda Verswijvelen says in the comments, you can make the learning activities pretty much the whole thing. And if you have meaningful testable verbs in your learning objectives, you can do that. I like Bloom’s Taxonomy, but with the additional step of only using verbs that can be used for providing feedback in the session.
