We had the best time talking with Josh Costa about Sleep Well Recycling for our latest podcast episode. While working at 1-800-Got-Junk, Josh saw tons of mattresses sent to the landfill and was inspired to start Sleep Well Recycling. Josh’s new business takes apart retired mattresses so they can recycle the component materials and divert 75%-100% of them away from the landfill and over to a recycling center or to McNeil Generating Station. https://lnkd.in/dnFgxKhi

I love talking trash (I've used that one already, I know). But that's not completely accurate because, as they say, one person's trash is another person's treasure. One of the most surprising things for me during my time as a Public Works Director is how complex and interesting the world of solid waste is, particularly when you talk about recycling and actually capturing revenue from recycled material. Eureka was a great partner and did a fantastic job of helping a traffic engineer understand and appreciate the world of recycling. (I also had an awesome partner at the City of Roseville in Ryan Johnson, the Environmental Manager, who managed the recycling program). Listen in as I talk to Kate Davenport about this crazy market of recycling. Also, let us know about your experiences in recycling. Does your community have a revenue sharing model? Did you have to stop collecting glass or any other material at some point in the last few years?
Let's nerd out about recycling some more. In our newest episode (Season 2 Episode 2) we are joined by Eureka Recycling's Strategic Advisor, Kate Davenport. We chat about the state of the recycling market, factors in the volatility of the recycling commodity pricing, and efforts to push the recycling market to a more sustainable model, namely Extended Producer Responsibility. We also talk about the history of Eureka Recycling and their mission towards a zero waste world. I've had the privilege of working with Kate and her staff through two contract negotiations and about 10 years of operations and I very much enjoyed our conversation on this topic. I hope you do as well! You can find the episode wherever you download your podcasts or on our YouTube channel and our podcast website. Nerds out! https://lnkd.in/gbS35_Sc https://lnkd.in/g_avQw8W

Reduce. Re-use. Recycle. ♻️ We all know the golden rules for basic sustainability. But how can buying into the circular supply chain up your sustainability game, allowing you to turn that “trash” into treasure? Ellen Wood, host of the Speaking of Supply Chain podcast, shares her insights and musings on sustainability and the circular supply chain. She uses the recent solar eclipse as a prime example of an opportunity to repurpose single-use items in a way that benefits communities in need and highlights the advantages of reusing items and byproducts that would otherwise go to waste. To learn more about valuable repurposing and recycling initiatives for waste reduction and how you can implement circular supply chain initiatives to reduce waste and leave a positive impact on the planet, listen to the full episode. How often do you stop to think about what happens to your waste after you throw it away? Our latest podcast episode tackles this burning question. 🔥 Join me for episode 117 of The Pursuit of Purpose, titled "From Waste to Wow," featuring guest Brad Pedersen! Here’s a snippet of Brad from our discussion 👇🏼: "Questions about Compostable Phones Vs various garbage disposal? It sounds very responsible, right? But here's the thing - often organic material ends up in a landfill inside a plastic bag, covered with clay or dirt that ends up breaking down anaerobically, releasing harmful emissions. The methane gas in these emissions is up to 80x more potent than CO2. 🌎 ☠ Furthermore, this process also creates something called 'leachate' which can contaminate our water systems." Don't miss this episode!
