I recently had to walk up Table Mountain for work and the prospect felt quite daunting as I hadn’t walked up in a few years. I’m a bit older now, not as fit, it is mid-winter, and it’s quite a steep hike up scrambling over rocks. All  which contributed to my excitement and un-ease. The prep stage I have friends who run up the mountain in less than an hour and I realised that even though they couldn’t be my benchmark I could ask them for time frames and any suggestions – which they happily passed on. Take water, a jacket, a snack bar, and hiking sticks, and be careful, the rocks are wet. The journey. With this information I decided to flip the whole thing on its head. My deadline was that I had to be up on top before sundown as I couldn’t be hiking in the dark. I knew what my goal was, and instead of seeing it as something I had to accomplish, I decided to see it as an adventure, taking lots of breaks-not only to sip on water, but also to enjoy the view of the city below and the surrounding mountain faces. And how did I end up doing it? One step at a time. And along the way I got to see this cable car framed in a rocky outcrop. Sometimes it just takes reframing of a task to make it less daunting and remembering to enjoy the view along the way. #createfulness #personalgrowth #leadershipdevelopment #professionaldevelopment #photofriday #photography

The pufferfish is nothing but inventive when it comes to creative ways to avoid becoming somebody else’s dinner. Filling their stomachs with huge amounts of water (and sometimes air), the pufferfish can blow themselves up to several times their regular size, intimidating their predators and making them a difficult snack to swallow. If blowing up to the shape of a ball doesn’t scare away any would-be predators, then some pufferfish have spines on their skin to deter being eaten. Other clever adaptions a pufferfish uses to keep itself safe include poisoning its enemies by secreting lethal toxins or even attacking other threatening animals with its beak-like teeth. In biology, any group of fish that stay together for social reasons are shoaling, and if the group is swimming in the same direction in a coordinated manner, they are schooling. In common usage, the terms are sometimes used rather loosely. About one quarter of fish species shoal all their lives, and about one half shoal for part of their lives. Fish derive many benefits from shoaling behaviour including defence against predators, enhanced foraging success, and higher success in finding a mate. It is also likely that fish benefit from shoal membership through increased hydrodynamic efficiency. Fish use many traits to choose shoalmates. Generally they prefer larger shoals, shoalmates of their own species, shoalmates similar in size and appearance to themselves, healthy fish, and kin. The oddity effect posits that any shoal member that stands out in appearance will be preferentially targeted by predators. This may explain why fish prefer to shoal with individuals that resemble themselves. The oddity effect thus tends to homogenize shoals. How many fish did you count? It looks amazing isn't it? Just don’t call it a menage! Agnes owns a holiday property which caters to people who love all things equestrian. 🐎 Her guests have the use of a wing of her house for their stay and can choose from any of her horses to ride for the day. The rate even includes riding lessons for children under 12. She commissioned me to shoot a drone image capturing the house, riding arena and expanse of land beyond to show the lifestyle her guests can look forward to during their stay. 👀 Agnes seems a placid type but if there is one thing that gets her goat it is uninformed people trying to sound clever and calling the riding arena a “menage”. “It’s a riding arena, but if you have to show off, it’s called a manege. A MENAGE is something quite different and nothing to do with horses”. 🐴 If you avoid that particular faux pas, you’ll not only find a warm welcome awaiting you at her farm, but as Agnes is an accomplished baker, there'll be some warm bread too!
