On the night on 24 March 1944, 76 Allied prisoners of war evade their German captors, escaping via a tunnel codenamed Harry, under the wire of a prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft III in Żagań (former Sagan). Tunnel Harry and digging effort in some numbers: ▶ length - 111 m ▶ depth - 9 m ▶ width - 0,6 m ▶ boards for shoring - aprox. 3000 to 4000 (from beds, chairs, tables, benches) ▶ electric lighting - yes (!!!) ▶ ventilation system - yes - a pump and aprox. 1000 tins. ▶ tons of soil removed - aprox. 130 ▶ spoons for digging - aprox. 500 ▶ shovels - aprox. 30 ▶ matresses, pilow cases, bed covers - to muffle sounds ❗ Done in secret amid a security operation policed by the POWs. https://lnkd.in/dU5wy-Dp
