Ever wondered when you'll get paid for your streams on Spotify? Let’s break it down! From the moment your tracks are played to the time the royalties hit your account, or as we like to call it: From Play to Pay!

Tis the season to be jolly so they say. Not necessarily so for artists who look upon the Spotify wrapped figures with an initial sense of dread and then disappointment however. Thus this is not the first time i’ve addressed this topic. Its a reminder that just cos McDonalds sell a lot of burgers doesn’t mean theyre the best burgers. The numbers are part of the story but they’re not the whole story. One piece of music can help save someone’s life ,create an amazing life long memory, define an era or inspire the listener to create positive change. The numbers don’t show that. The numbers dont show the love that is put into creating music nor the love that the listener might develop for a particular song…albeit if the total amount of streams is small. Its music…it isn’t supposed to be all about numbers. Respect to the artists out there. Keep doing your thing. #spotify#spotifywrapped#streaming

Spotify changes Q1 2024
Spotify is shaking up its royalty game with some fresh changes. Now, they're rolling out a minimum annual streaming threshold, meaning tracks need to hit a certain number of plays before they start generating royalties. This might seem like a bit of a downer for those tracks that previously grabbed a piece of the pie with just a little action.
But that's not all - there's a new sheriff in town for distributors, including labels. Spotify's getting serious about cracking down on fraud. So, if any shady business is detected on tracks they've uploaded, these distributors will be feeling it in their wallets.
And let's not forget the background noise - there's a minimum play-time requirement for those non-music 'noise' tracks if they want to get in on the royalty action. So, expect some big shifts in how the music money's flowing.

Spotify reportedly pays artists between $0.003 and $0.005 per stream, though this rate can vary. If we take a middle ground of $0.004 per stream, to make £1,000,000, you would need around 250 million streams, considering the current exchange rate. However, this is a simplified calculation and actual earnings can be more complex due to the aforementioned factors.
The actual number could be higher if the per-stream payout is on the lower end or if the majority of streams come from countries with lower payout rates. Remember that taxes, fees, and other costs may also apply.
Spotify has a bad business model (not the only one thought). That is why they are implementing new rules and stuff to make artists earn even less.
For those who don't know, at the moment each play equals $0.004. And artists get even less, due to a % that goes to the label or distributor).
I think they, as a company/brand, don't even realize that their product, the music, isn't even theirs! Besides, a study made last year I believe, concluded that 80% of all music streamed on spotify is old music.
Musicians always made around 10% of every album/EP/single, even before digital music was a thing. With digital sales, and now streaming, not much has changed. If any, for worse. However a few platforms out there, such as bandcamp, can still be valuable for indie artists.
Anyway, finally some big artists are waking up and comparing their "spotify wrapped" to what they really get.
