If your ADAS/AD data efforts are too expensive, I recommend considering this: "The best way to make rapid progress in steering an AI product is to focus on that which impacts model performance. In fact, most teams find tons of frames in their dataset that they hadn’t expected with objects they don’t need to worry about – blurry images at distances that do not impact the model." The 'high quality data' dogma is a massive cost sink. OEMs, T1s and labeling companies have over years convinced themselves (and each other) that high-quality datasets are a differentiating asset by default. But datasets are only a means to an end, that being an ML-enabled product - or does your data lake show up on your company's balance sheet? If you want to save big bucks on data, align your labeling with your current ODD/OEDR KPIs: classifying 8-pixel blurs on the horizon is probably not in your requirements at this point; plus you could always come back and 'refine' datasets if and when you have a business driver for it. This capability of iteratively 'programming with data' can be the actual advantage - to quote from the interview again: "Many businesses aren’t comfortable working in this manner. The automotive sector for instance has traditionally operated on a waterfall methodology, but it is absolutely vital we see a mindset shift if we are to successfully align AI systems with human expectations."

The journey from initial collaborative discussions, exploring "what ifs," to realizing dreams and moving towards practical implementation has been remarkable. Working with artistic visionaries to harness AI on a grand scale has been a profound experience.
